Question about Sony VPL-HS20 Multimedia Projector

5 Answers

Powering up My HS20 is 4 years old and still had 400 hrs of bulb life. Recently when I turned on the projector, an amber light flashed for a few minutes then powered down. Tried several times to no avail. No images projected on the screen. Does this mean that the bulb is burned out? Is there any way to test the bulb before buying a new one? Please advise. In regards to the comment concerning my problem, the filter has been cleaned - and the fan comes when powering up. The bulb does not come on when powered up. As mentioned before, when powering up the projector runs for about 2 minutes, with fan running and amber light flashing, then powers down.

    Please advise

Hi,

The Sony VPL-HS20 powers down when it senses something is wrong. This is to prevent any further damage to the circuitry. Part of its built-in diagnostics is to determine presence and bulb-life. The flashing light and the turning off both indicates a component failure. You may want to consider replacing the lamp. Depending on your location, replacement Sony LMP H180 - projector lamp maybe be available from online stores such as here, here or here.

Alternately, it may be to your advantage to simply have the unit serviced and not only lamp replacement. Service would include cleaning, lamp replacement and timer reset of bulb hours. Doing so would assure you that you can expect the same number of years of service from the HS20.

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Lamp problem

testing the lamp before buying a new one is the best way but you need to have an identical or compatible projector to test the lamp. best place to find one is a repair shop or if a store will accommodate if request for it.

Hi.

Yes the symptoms shows the bulb is down.
According to me there is no way to check the bulb.
I would advice you to get it checked at a repair shop before going to replace the bulb as there might be other problems.

Regards
Faraz

To get the best time out of your Projector and your lamp , you should take in your Projector at least twice a year for a service.

If you want to clean out the filters , simply take a vacuum cleaner and vacuum the dust out.

As for the fan , this could be as a result of dust , but I would suggest you have it checked out by a Sony Service Provider as fan malfunction is the biggest cause of lamps blowing.

Also try not to run the Projector for short periods at a time as this simply eats away on your lamp. Rather leave it running for longer periods a Projector's lamp is similar to the lamp's you use in your house - switching on and off all the time makes the lamp's fillament weak - Take my word on this , I've had please using the Projector to watch a odd movie now and then and they only get 500 - 1000 hours on their lamps. And then I've had clients who use their Projectors as TV's and they got 10 000 - 15000 hours on their lamps.

My projector's power light is red, but when I click power it won't turn to green (on)

The likeliest problem here may be a burned out or failed projector bulb. Most projectors will fail to power up at all when if the bulb is out. The HD20 user manual does not specify a red light as an error indication option however, generally amber.
User manual .pdf is located here (takes a bit to download for it's size), Projector Status Indicator instructions are located on page 40.
Here on the product page itself, an email to Optima support may be warranted given the red instead of amber error light.
If you had any messages recently indicating your bulb life was nearing it's end, again, this would be my first guess. Certain models of projectors do have a tendency of blowing through bulbs even before any warning message comes up. I had an experience with a certain brand/model that for the last 3 replacements has given only about 1/4 of the stated bulb life, so unfortunately it does happen.

Projector turns on but no light or image from lens.

The bulbs do not always look broken when dead. You say it is used often. The life of a bulb is around 1400 hours I believe. This normally equates to a year or two depending on your usage levels. Did you notice your image getting dimmer in the months before it stopped working? This would be a good sign it was in need of replacement. Are the lights flashing very rapidly or blinking slowly? If they are flashing very rapidly this indicated the bulb will not fire and needs replacing.

How old is it ? Approx how many hrs have you used it? Was it set at Lo speed / low power or hi speed / max power on bulb and fan? Do you smoke in the same room? Is the unit ceiling mounted ( more concentrated hot air ). Have you had a power failure while the unit was on? The bulbs used in many projectors , although claiming 3000 or more Hrs ,are subject to early failure. If the unit or bulb is new ( less than 1 yr. old, contact the service manager at that co. and complain about short life; IThat works !
