Question about Televison & Video

5 Answers

I have a Samsung LN-T5265F LCD TV. Recently, I've been having an issue with it where a three-inch wide green band appears down the center of the screen (during DVD playback from an HDMI-connected PS3 and coax-connected cable from Comcast) for about five seconds followed by a sort of green "shadowing" effect on the right side of the screen that lasts for about ten seconds. This has happened twice since yesterday, but there doesn't seem to be any residual effect; the screen behaves normally after the green stuff goes away. Does anybody have any suggestions?

The problem has escalated since my original post. The green bands have been replaced by thin, colored vertical lines that run from the top of ONE SIDE of the screen to the bottom. The colors and width of the lines vary when the TV is turned off then on again but remain onscreen. I would appreciate any suggestions or input as to what part(s) is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. Thanks.

All of the external connections are fine. (I haven't dismantled the TV or anything yet.) The screen malfunctions even when nothing is connected (ie, the TV is plugged in and the blank screen is still affected). Could it be any other parts?

OK, I know my television is an LCD and not a projection TV. I am not technologically challenged. I have no idea why FixYa posted my problem under Projection TVs after I clearly searched for my TV by model number and posted my question regarding it.

In addition to not being technologically challenged, I am also not logically challenged. The first thing I did when I noticed the problem was check on the warranty. It has expired which is why my question is posted on FixYa.

I would like to express my gratitude for all the legitimate assistance many of you have provided, but I am also intolerant of pseudo-advice (ie, stating the obvious and not actually answering my question) that is of very little use.

Could someone please provide me with some information to find out how to figure out if my TV panel is one that Samsung has offered to replace?

I agree with mistersony. You have a bad TCON board.

If you had a problem with the panel itself, you should be able to recreate the stripe by tapping the edge of the screen (lightly). If it is indeed a connectivity issue between the ribbon and the glass, a light tapping should disrupt it. Most likely, it is the board, and power related. I would suggest returning it.

I work more with computers than T.V's but the issuie is similar to what happens to LCD screens on our laptops. They have Crystals like the other guy mentioned and usually have a ribbone or some other way they are connected to the board. Here is what might cause the issue.

The GPU could be bad. ( graphics Processor Unit) If its part of the main circuit board, then it will most likeley need to be replaced, If its a seperate GPU that can be removed from the main circuite board, then you may be able to order just that. Depending of course on the T.V.

The other issue could just be a lose connector ribbon, if so inclined, you could take the case apart, but leave the screen on, and power it up and lightly tap the data ribbon and see iof it causes more or less distortion. Then you will know its the ribon and can see about just order and replacing that.

The other issue could be that the connection from the ribbon itself to the screen could be damaged and you would have to replace that.

This information is based off of llaptop LCD's which are similar excpet in size. Is there any video mode that the color bars do not show?

Idf its one of the above issues, then you would have the problem on all video modes. If its only on one, then it might be those input jacks.

Allthough im betting its the GPU chip. Let me know and good luck.

You either have a bad LCD panel OR a bad TCON board. The TCON board is basically the address board for the panel, it tell the panel which lines and pixels are turned on and off, and when to do it. You could try replacing the TCON board, as it is obviously the cheaper option over replacing the panel. A TCON board for your set is available here:

Be aware that Samsung had a bad run of 46" and 52" panels recently, and many are just starting to show up as defective. Samsung is aware of this issue and has offered to replace the panels in some cases. I hope this information is what you are looking for; feel free to ask any additional questions if you have them.

Samsung has not published the model listing with the panels that are defective. They are handling the panel replacements on a case-by-case basis. The only way for you to know is to contact Samsung customer support. I am sorry if this was not the answer you were looking for.

Let me explain whats wrong with LCD Panel. ( bit technical though)
There are few connectors on LCD panel sides to send picture signal / data. These connectors are bounded with adhesive material to LCD panel as its made of 2 sheets of glass and inside crystals of liquid display.
If any of these connectors become lose, such problem comes and this is not repairable at repair shop level. That is why LCD panel will be replaced.
There is another issue of cost of LCD panel That is why I asked you warranty cover. You can ask an estimate from Samsung for LCD panel replacement which would be near to TV price.

It could be because of two problems 1)either the connection is loose somewhere.make it proper. or 2)its the problem of main board and needs reparing to make it proper. components gets faulty or are at the end of its life.need to be checked with a multimeter to locate the faulty ones.

How do I correct pink and green bands accross HP-R4252 Plasma TV

First of all try, changing the input device to some other and see whether you see the same problem. Then connect your present input to a different TV and see. If you feel the input is ok, and it is a problem in the display, this is a case to be handled by a qualified service technician.

I got multiple thin colors on the middle of the screen

My 3-year old 52-inch Toshiba flat panel TV (Model # 52RV53U, Serial # AM409000295) developed a display issue (purchased Aug. 2008, manufactured July 2008). Vertical multicolored lines appeared on the screen just left of center. The band of thin vertical bars is 5.5 inches wide. The lines are about 1/16-inch wide. They are stationary, always exactly in same place. They over-ride any other picture on the screen (no transparency). They are there all time even with no video inputs to the TV after the unit is turned on. See picture #1. The TV works well in every other respect, but, obviously, it is annoying to watch the picture with the color band blocking about 1/6 of the picture.

Further info, pics, comments, and updates on my Facebook page at

http://on.fb.me/mVwhVN

I already swapped out the TCON board with no improvement and replugged the TCON board cables with no improvement.

Most likely it is the flat panel tab bond failure (panel made by Samsung). Further updates will be on my Facebook page.

I have the same TV and it's doing the same thing but on the left side. We had a local repair shop come out to diagnose and he told us this is the result of a loose ribbon cable on the LCD panel that would require replacement of the LCD panel - cost would be about the same as a new TV.
