Hope this goes well, I am a virgin placing a new topic in. Sorry if I have done something wrong
Front end - back end exchange 2003 SP2 setup. front end on a dmz, firewall open for all ports and working correctly with Owa\oma All configured on one virtual directory and default website. SSL and certificate all working correctly on Front End. Smartphone and imate used for testing and works. Windows Mobile 5.0 with latest active sync
My Problem is
Trying to configure Activesync so that exchange pushes email correctly to mobile device. This will only work if microsoft outlook is open on the client computer. The clients are remote so they are using cache mode. I have looked fully into this and searched everything but I cannot find a way to resolve this problem. Very interested to know how to fix exchange so that is pushes out to the Imate
Love the Google Groups, saved me hassles for years
-   I'm having the same problem. The Sprint Mogul I have won't sync with exchange unless Outlook is open on my desktop. i don't have any problems any other time.-   Pumfa

-   I am having the same problem. I couldnt believe it. I made a user prove it to me. There is no BlackBerry server in this environment. These are new WM5 devices that shipped with the MSFP. ActiveSync also is having problems with an initial sync. In other words if a user performs a master reset, when he syncs again his contacts do not pull back down to the device. It is scanning for changes to the contacts, so if he modifies a contact in outlook it will then sync to the device. Not sure if it is a seperate issue or if the two are related.
-   Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem? We are having the same issue with our Tre 750 from AT&T.-   BTrent

Sounds like the phone doesn't actually have the MSFP build on it. How long have you had the phone, when did you install the MSFP build and does the vendor confirm it's got it?

Hmm - I thought I posted another response, but I guess not.
As far as the hypothesis, I've never seen the behavior you are seeing. Exchange does keep a record of adds/moves/changes, but it does so in the transaction logs, which are then committed to the database. There is no "separate" database that is used for ActiveSync.
I'm not sure what information you are looking for on how ActiveSync works via GPRS/SSL. AUTD/Push actually only works over cellular connections. Can you be more specific?
Does ActiveSync pull across new mail if you initiate a manual sync? Or is that part of the problem you are seeing?
If the WM5 device does *not* have the MSFP/AKU 2.0 update applied, it is still using AUTD for notifications. Some carriers have problems with the way Exchange sends out the sms notifications. There is a hotfix that takes care of that. #

Hi Ben & Mark,
I work with Finger and just wanted to clarify the problem we're seeing. I think he swayed a little too much towards AUTD/push, but that's not the core problem.
We actually have 2 devices - an O2 Smartphone IIm running mobile 2003 and an i-Mate JAMin running mobile 5. Obviously, the former doesn't even have "push" capability. The root of the problem is this: - if you are logged into a PC within the network and are running Outlook, Activesync will fully synchronise mail - if the above is not true i.e. you do not have an Outlook client logged into the Exchange server, Activesync goes through all of the normal motions, but does not get any new mail messages - there is one exception to the above; if you visit oma via the browser on the phone and look at your Inbox, then go to Activesync and synchronise, it does it perfectly
I hypothesise that Activesync queries the Exchange server, which keeps a small "database" of adds/moves/changes. When Outlook is connected, or you use OMA, it forces the server to update this database When it's not, Exchange doesn't update it and, hence, Activesync doesn't get the message. Unfortunately, we've been able to find little information about the relationship between Exchange and Activesync when used via GPRS and an SSL tunnel. Note that Outlook cache mode has nothing to do with it; we've tried both ways. We're absolutely sure that the firewall is not cutting us off too. It's gotta be at the Exchange server and/or OWA gateway (we use FE/BE mode).
Here is a possible solution for this issue. I found reference to it on another site and thought I would post it here for others. Apparently there is an issue with virus scanners blocking push when active on a server. This is documented for Symantec and CA that I am aware of and likely some others. To fix it try this in the registry on the Exchange server:
I had the same issue with Windows Mobile 6 and and Exchange 2003 server.
Hope that helps someone.

- Not sure if anyone solved this issue or not but I have a solution that worked for others. I am testing it on my configuration. I realize it has been a while since this was posted but if anyone else finds it like I did it might help them as well. I was having similar issues and I am using Motorola Q 9c and PPC 6800 handhelds. We are connecting to an Exchange 2003 server. Like others on this post my handhelds wont download mail unless outlook is up for the account in question on a desktop somewhere. One more symptom is if you go to OMA via a browser and view mail it will download to the handheld fine.
After a lot of playing I discovered that this is an anti-virus issue. There is a setting in the registry of the server running Exchange that resolves this issue:

- I have a theory that I haven't been able to test yet. I believe this may be due to forms based authentications. If anyone is still reading this thread, please let me know if you are using forms based authentication for OWA.
I found a few articles that may explain this. (They dont describe the exact symptom, but it seems to make sense) Basically Exchange is looking for Kerberos authentication, and Forms based doesnt provide that. So while outlook is open the user is authenticated to Exhcange and activesync will work until the user logs off and is no longer authenticated.
"The /Exchange virtual directory can't be accessed by OMA and ActiveSync if it's hosted in this fashion. Forms-based authentication can only work through the Basic authentication method (the security for the process is supplied by the SSL connection itself); but ActiveSync's virtual directory can only connect to the Exchange Server virtual directory via Kerberos (NTLM) authentication. "
I am having the same problem, the smartphone is fine, because when you configure to connect to another exchange it works fine, but in one particular exchange only fully works if outlook is opened... srponte@gmail.com

- The SmartPhone is working fine, DirectPush is also working, I can tell this because when I configure it to access another Exchange Server, it works correctly. In the other Server, Outlook must be opened to ActiveSync update the smartphone by air... very odd!!! In my opinion should be something about Exchange or IIS, maybe a corrupted DLL. I wanted to reinstall Exchange SP2, to all the DLL be overwritten, but the SP2 does not reinstall if it has been installed before. Regards, Sergio

- I have just found out that somehow the BlackBerry Server is interfering with exchange, the smartphone only works correctly to the users in the BBerry server.

I haven't seen anything else added to this request after my mate added some more information. Is there anybody out there able to head us into the right direction for active sync to work correctly?
