I am using windows xp(sp3) on a dell inspiron 1720 laptop, connecting wirelessly to a adsl gateway, which is then connected wired to a netgear router, then wired to the tplink ps310u, then via usb to ah hp deskjet 5550 printer. The printer is set to use a virtual usb port. The "MFP and Storage Server" periodically disconnects the printer, even though the settings in the "storage server" are set to stay connected, there are no check marks by the "disconnect printer when idle" or "disconnect storage device when idle", and the storage device is set to connect automatically when windows starts. After not using the computer for a while, then trying to print from any program, the first printing attempt usually fails with an error in the printer queue. Cancelling the print job, closing the mfp server and restarting the server and reconnecting the printer will sometimes clear the error, if that fails, I have also exited the storage server, stop and restart the print spooler server in the admin services section, then reopen the mfp storage server and reconnect the printer...........that always solves the problem. Any ideas on a solution to resolving this problem? At least 1/2 of the time, I can't print without jumping through these hoops! Thank you, loricar

Hi there,
Have you tried turning off firewall programs or resident anti virus like windows firewall, windows defender, AVG, norton, mcafee etc?
PLease try turning them off especially the firewall and check if they will print.
Hope this helps!
Hi
If you can't scan then it sounds as if your computer doesn't have the appropriate driver installed for scanning. There are a lot of drivers and other downloads here:
Printers
including a scanner driver for MAC OS 10.3 to 10.7. Since Yosemite is 10.10, I don't know if this would work for you, but I think it your most promising solution.
It may be worth disconnecting the printer and connecting it directly to the computer. If it scans and prints when directly connected then it is likely that the print server is causing the problem and if as you say there is no Mac software for it you may be in a no-win situation. The fact that you can print through it however does mean there is hope, because I have found this page which is described as manual installation of the server on Mac OS here
FAQ ID 347 How to install Print Server manually on MAC OS
but the OS is 10.6.4 so, I'm not sure.
Not as helpful as I had hoped but perhaps you can get something from this screed
