Question about Apple PowerBook G4 Mac Notebook

Powerbook G4 LCD White

I have a lighted white screen. Everything works fine. I've replaced the inverter and cables. I can see everything fine when connected to an external monitor. Could it be the lcd. I'm thinking that because the computer works fine on every other account...that it's not the logic board...but I could be wrong. I'm praying that it's not anyway.

Clarification- Everything works fine on the laptop after installing the inverter and a new cable. But, I still have a white screen. Everything (shows up fine) and operates when I connect the laptop to an external monitor.

Thank you! I suspected the last two as possible problems. I have replaced the inverter and the cable. Still white. I just received a new lcd and will try that. In the event that it is the video connector...is that something that can be soldered, or do you know the location so that I can check it? Thanks again!

Well you either have one of 3 things wrong with the computer:

  1. the video connector on the logic board is broken or not making a full connection
  2. the video cable from the logic board to the LCD panel is damaged.
  3. the LCD panel is dead

My LCD powerbook G4 has a white vertical line

This is usually symptomatic of a chafed or pinched LVDS cable, especially if the line comes and goes as you work the hinges. This not a user-replaceable part. If the line does not flicker when the hinges are moved, there is a possibility that your LCD screen itself has gone bad.

Dark Screen

Try connecting to an external monitor. If the monitor displays correctly, then the problem is with either the inverter or the screen.

An area on the display it's not working. PowerBook G4

I'm sorry to say that you will have to replace the screen soon. That vertical black and white lines that appear is the early warning signs that your screen will soon go blurry, or have a partial screen, or have it just stop working. This happens from the many times the screen was lifted open and closed and the ribbon cables just need to be replaced. And since the ribbon cables can't be simply unplugged and then replaced, you will just need to get a new replacement screen.

Colors on Mac G4 Powerbook display are severely distorted

Hi
Goto Apple>SystemPreferences>

in the System section choose UniveralAccess>Seeing and make sure it says Black on White is selected, that Use Grayscale is unchecked and contrast is set to Normal.

If it's not that then its your display and needs a service.

All the best

Backlight

The problem is fairly common and while you could test the long-shot possibility that it's not the inverter but the actual CCFL "bulb" (a tube really) that produces the light and sits in the bottom of the LCD panel, the chances are that it's a circuitry problem on the logic board. I've never had luck replacing inverters in these computers (though it works like a charm in PCs).

With the symptoms you have though, it might make sense to try the $20 inverter rather than replace the logic board. It's really quite simple. Just follow the instructions on THIS PAGE and select Apple MacBook Pro (even though you have a PowerBook it's almost exactly the same.)

It will walk you through taking the back off and pulling the LCD, but just notice that on Diagram #2 it shows you where the inverter board is. Just take it out, remove the two cables going to it and replace it with a known good one from eBay. It will be a great $20 way to check a cheap solution. After that fails, replace the logic board.

Or, for more fun, find another person with another laptop who doesn't mind you pulling it apart. Almost all 12" laptops will use a similar CCFL, so you can plug your LCD panel into just the two prong CCFL plug (shown in step 3 of the walk through). If you find someone else with a powerbook or iBook I know for certain that your screen's CCFL plug will fit.

So you could do all this or you could find someone on Craigslist to do it for you for a pretty cheap cost. Good Luck.

to peachgroup: if you have a lighted White screen, it is something completely different.

Lcd is not working

I'd highly recommend taking into the Apple Genius bar. You've definitely damaged something. You might be lucky and one of the connectors came loose, but most likely you damaged the LCD which will need to be replaced.
