Question about Compaq Presario SR1810NX Sempron 3200+ 1.8 GHz Desktop PC ( Monitor Sold Separatley) (ER912AA)

1 Answer

Wont boot up

It wont boot up. I have plugged and unplugged everything. Nothing comes up on the monitor, and there is just a consistent beep. No pattern to the beep, other than a heartbeat monitor. I have no clue, and I am rather ignorant with computers. Sorry.

We need to open the case and inspect the cables and cards and memory to make sure nothing has gotten dislodged. heres how to get into the case.
Before Opening the PC
1
Remove any diskette or optical disc (CD or DVD)
from the PC.
2 Disconnect the modem/telephone cable, if present.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk of personal
injury from electrical shock or hot
surfaces, disconnect the power cord from
the wall outlet, and allow the internal
system components to cool before
touching.
3
Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet
and then from the PC.
4 Disconnect all other attached cables (such as the
keyboard, mouse, and monitor) and all external
devices.
Removing the Side Panel
1
Remove the side panel by loosening the screw on
that secures the panel to the PC chassis.
2 Slide the panel back about 1 inch (2.5 cm), and
then lift it off the unit.
WARNING: Beware of sharp edge

Once the side panel is off you will see the computers internal parts. Follow all the cables from the power suppy (top rear of tower) to th devices on the other end and make sure all are COMPLETELY in the sockets. Now do the same with the rest of the ribbon cables.
Now check all add-in CARDS installed into slots on the main boardand make sure they are ALL the way into there slots, sometimes these gets jarred or bound by the case and will work thier way loose.
Last check the RAM, the small rectangular shaped sticks with chips on them installed into similar slots on the main board, these can be up just a tiny bit in thier slots and the computer will freeze.
While you have the case open take note of any burnt smells or apparent swollen parts (capacitors), fans not working (inside & out).
It could also be your power supply going out, ive seen em light up the light on the mainboard , but not have any power to the harddrive and lock a system up.
Go through these things , it might be these , it might be something else, but its good to know your computer is clean and all mechanics in it are working visually from time to time. i can of compressed dust remover spray goes a long way to clean out those dirty fans and heat syncs underneith them.

try this and post again ....

Thank you for using FixYa

I would try shutting down the computer in the normal way, and turning off the monitor.
Boot up and turn the monitor back on.
If it still doesn't work, then I would check the cables and power plugs and wall plugs.
Check the mouse and keyboard cable and any other cables plugged into the computer.
The next step requires a seperate monitor or laptop.
Try unplugging the monitor and pluging in another monitor. Most laptops have a common
VGA adaptor jack or even an Svideo jack.
If the other monitor does not work, Then take to a qualified technician for repair.
It could be your power supply in the computer or video controller.

I hope this was useful and please comment if this was helpful to you.

Worked fine last night, discovered it this morning still turned on but no signal to monitor. Rebooted and it began a consistent beeping with no signal to monitor. Unplugged several times to no avail....

the beeping is coming from the cpu.

1 unplug pc
2 pull out ram chips
3 use an eraser to clean the gold, yes thats gold

what happens is the gold on the ram oxidizes and does not connect properly and can go bad but cleaning it with an eraser sometimes works. take a cpu that is working unplu it pull the ram and you will see the same thing your other pc is doing.

4 reinstall ram (correctly)
5 boot up cpu
6 please vote.

Short of it being something simple like your monitor cable is unplugged, the more likely problem is that there's a fault on your motherboard or graphics card.
You should have an internal speaker connected to your motherboard, it should be giving beeps depending on what the problem is. If everything is ok then there should be a single beep.
If you are not hearing anything try removing your RAM and boot up, you should get lots of loud beeps, if you hear nothing then it's likely your motherboard is faulty.

Getting power but wont boot up or anything

pull out everything in the computer except what's required to boot...so any pci cards or video cards (if you have onboard video). you can also try pulling out the ram (while unpowered AND unplugged) and then booting to hear beeps...if you pull the ram out and the computer doesnt make a sound, its probably a bad motherboard and needs to be replaced. if you hear beeps, try replacing the ram or disconnecting other parts...like harddrives, optical drives, modems and what not.

When I turn the hard drive on it beeps 6 times intermittently and doesnt boot up as normal. The monitor is switched on but there is no picture. I tried another monitor with my hard drive and that worked...

Unplug power from the machine for a period of 5-10 minutes.

Plug it back in and attempt to boot. Carefully notice if there are any beeps again, and listen for pauses in between. Dell beep codes go in a three pulse pattern I.E. 4-Slight Pause-4-Slight Pause-2-Pause/ and repeat.

After this, you may have to open your machine and assure that everything is well connected.

There is a chance however that a major system component has failed and needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Computer doesn't boot

This is a classic bad ram beep code. Take one of the sticks out and reboot. Then do same with next..if both are bad then beep will continue. Just buy some more RAM and install it will be fine.

Please rate this solution.

Dell gx 150

Chuck,
The 6 beeps are an error code. You should note a pattern such as 3 beeps, short pause, 1 beep, short pause, 2 beeps. Also, you may have a set of 4 error indicators on the back of the unit that will show a pattern of green and yellow lights. In any case, you will want to try to run the Dell diagnostics. Let us know the beep pattern and the light pattern and we should be able to give you some more specific information.
