Question about Canon PowerShot A80 Digital Camera
Yes !! I wacked it a couple of times on a hard surface and it started working again after I dropped it and got the dreaded E18 error mesage in the middle of a Jewelry shoot. wm

Whack the camera against a hard surface a couple times. That should do the trick.
Source: I own the same camera and had the same problem in the past. Other forums talked about this problem and this was usually the best course of action.

Same problem here, with a Powershot A80. When switching on, the camera shows boot screen and moves lens, but shuts down immediately with an unusual noise. E18 on the screen for a short time. Banging it on a wooden surface a few times made the problem go away.

The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.
