I had one computer on this router for about 6 months. I ran a wire to my shop about 200 ft. When I hook up the wire to #2 computer, and #2 slot in router, I have a message that the cable is not connected. I have checked the wires for continuity, and there is not a problem. Is there some setting I have to change?

Re: N1 wireless Router
Check to make sure the each pin connnection in the plug on both the router and the computer are not bent , pushed down , or just not in alignment , also you can try unplugging the router then plug it back in

When you only get 5 mbps are you connecting to the new router wirelessly or via the ethernet cable? If it is wirelessly then try connecting with an ethernet cable and see if you still get 5 mbps. If so then try resetting the router (the procedures for this will be explained in the manual) and re-test. Wireless connections can slow down due to obstacles such as thick walls or other obstacles of that type. If all else fails return the unit and try another.
This is a known problem with the Belkin N1 Vision Modem Router. The router keeps time by connecting to a Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) server every 2 hours. The solution is to go to www.belkin.com and download and install the pre-release firmware which is supposed to fix "A problem where the router could drop some connections on 2-hour intervals" among other things.

The router sound like it is not being nice. You need to ask your friend if they went in and changed things. If the router and Accesspoint came together and your friend changed settings, then they are not talking to each other.
1. Your running wireless for gaming. Consider running straight net cable to your ps3. It is faster by far.
2. Cisco / Linksys router access points seem good and support is free 24/7 and pretty good. They make them to be a no brainer. 6 months at it, i feel your pain. If you cannot get it working consistently within 20 minutes, call support and if they cannot resolve it, return it and find another solution till it works for you.
