I have the same problem, new machine, and I haven't sewn a stich.
I have the same problem with my new machine I bought last fall, It will not pick up the bobbin thread. I am furious, since I haven't sewn on stitch on it. And when I called Singer got no where. They promised to send me the paperwork so it could be under warranty and nothing came. And now they tell me it is to late. I have had it with the new Singer machines. Tried a new one given to my mom, and it won't even thread the bobbin. This sucks.

you may find that the needle is bent. or maybe the machine needs a cleaning I use canned air for this it blows the lint out so nicely . if this is a new machine then take it back to where you bought it and see what they can do.
Have you changed your needle? If you have a dull or bent needle it can cause the machine to not lock the stitches together and the result is a straight stitch on every pattern. Also, check your stitch width selector and make sure that it did not get accidently moved.
