I get static and distortion in Stereo mode.

if you are reffering to a radio fm receiver, the issue is the signal strength is too low.so the multiplex transmission cannot be correctly unscrambled.mono reduces the cross channel interference.
use a high gain 12 db or above external vhf antenna to solve this problem

look in the battery compartment for a series of tiny switches under the batteries.. these switches must be identical for each radio..it puts them on the same frequency..then select channels with no interference..retry radios..

I have 2 SX709 handsets. When set to a number other than zero (on any channel) they communicate between each other well, but can't receive transmission from other sets. When set to zero, they will receive,...

Sounds like a receive sensitivity issue. The radio you have with the static is likely very sensitive to other RF (radio frequency waves) in the area. Turning on the interference eliminator code (setting it to a number) blocks out this unwanted noise. This radio is not repairable, and there is no fix for this problem. The only fix would be to set the "other sets" to have the same code.

best regards.

We have had severe weather all day and it didn't go off. It had been working perfectly for a year. When I turn on the weather/snooze button I get a constant loud squeal on every channel. any ideas??

Check this website's FAQs page- http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=nwrfaq. Your answer may be in FAQ #10. It may be also that your local NWS transmitter may not have been receiving a good transmission because of the type of severe weather that you had. Maybe you should call your local NWS office and plea your case. I don't know if this will help, but this is my suggestion.

What mic are you using for this. It won't take just any mic. It has to be wired midland.
