Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Business DVD 66J-02289-oem PC Desktop

VISTA Business cannot 'see' XP machine in same workgroup

I have a machine running VISTA Business SP1. The other machine is running XP SP2. From the XP machine I can see the Vista machine and all the shares including printer. From the VISTA machine I cannot even see the XP machine.

I can ping the other machine from both machines (on the same subnet). I have tried setting the network connection on the Vista machine to public and private with no joy. I have disabled firewalls on both machines.

Can someone please help?

Thanks

Les

They are indeed in the same Workgroup.

They are both in the same workgroup...

  • LesInSA Oct 15, 2008

I have gone through the whole document and have checked everything. I can still only access the VISTA machine from my XP laptop. The VISTA machine under 'Network' does not show the XP machine at all...

    Hi Ginko,

Thanks for your patience. I do a fair amount of troubleshooting in my own area of expertise (VoIP) and I think it pertinent to add the following information that could affect the situation.
    1. The VISTA machine was an upgrade from XP Pro SP2
    2. The laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad with all it's irritating additional networking software.

Now I have gone through all that and enabled sharing wherever I could find it but I'm not sure if there may still be something that is not compatible with VISTA even though it's not running on the laptop?

  • LesInSA Oct 15, 2008

Yes the workgroup name is the same on the two machines

  • LesInSA Oct 15, 2008

    ohms,

The problem is the other way around... VISTA can't 'see' the XP machine...

  • LesInSA Oct 15, 2008

    Hi Benimur,

Sorry I don't know where to change msconfig? Is this on the XP side or the VISTA side?

Remember it's VISTA that can't see XP...

    Thanks

    Les

Thank you very much guys it's now working!

As feedback all I did was to enter:
    \\XPmachinename\ShareName
It connected and now suddenly I have the machine icon with all the shares in the Network window!!??

I still don't understand how or why... but it's working!

Fantastic response... will certainly come back for more!!

Hey, Its simple. You just need to enable file sharing in XP machine.
Goto Control Panel> Network Connections>
On the left panel,  Setup home or office network>  Read the options and keep clicking next.  There will be a option to turn on file sharing. Make sure its enabled. (Do not change the workgroup name during this process).
After your done. You may have to restart the XP machine.
Now you can connect from Vista machine by going to Windows> Run
type  \\XPMachineName

It will connect now.

Hi,

A remote possibility, enable/check "Server" and "Workstation" inside msconfig and/or verify that services are started on the XP machine. Alternately, pls try manually configured IP adds on both machines. Another is to check "Automatically search for network folders and printers" in the View tabof Folder Options.

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Other possibilities are different DNS, pls try nslookup at the > prompt. Both XP and Vista should have identical Default Server and address. Or try checking the hosts file contains the same addresses.

    Hi again,

    Appreciate the quick postback.

    • In both XP and Vista, Start, Run, "msconfig" less the quotes, OK.

    • In the Services Configurations utility, Services tab, pls verify that both "Server" and "Workstation" services re checked.
    Alternately, Windows key + R

If you have checked both Server & WorkStation Services, pls verify that they have been started in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services or manually start them. Alternately, simply reboot the machine after checking in msconfig.

The main point is to have access to a shared resource on the vista (networking between xp & vista sometimes is funky):

share a folder or a resource on the Vista machine and map it on the XP machine

\\vista_machine_name\resource_name\

Check that the two machines are in the same workgroup on network settings.

Ensure that both computers have shared resources on the network.

    Restart router
Start first the computer with XP.
Start the System with Vista as administrator, see here : administrator account
Disable all firewalls and see if Vista get the other computer.

If that does not work tru uninstalling from installed devices and reinstalling both network cards, this will reset network settings. Be sure you know how to reinstall the network adapters, or you will be in troubles afterward.

You should also check router settings, if there is a range of trusted IPs in router firewall, you should add the whole range of your local network. If the router is at factory default there should be no problem of this kind.

Hello no1sugard, go to this "Website," and "Download the Updates" for Windows XP
(Service Pack 3)."
  • First make sure that you have [SP1 and SP2] already installed in your Computer?
  • To {check} which "Service Pack" you have already?
  • If not?
  • Then you must "Download SP1 and SP2 first!"
  • Open "the Computer Properties," by [Alt / Right] clicking on the Computer in the 'shortcut menu' of the "Start Menu."
If this information helped? Return and give a "Helpful Rating," please!

Can I use Office 97 with vista?

Hello !

Before you try to install Office 97 (should work), uninstall any other MS Office software.

My other advice is to run Vista SP1 and not upgrade to Vista SP2.

Hope this helps.

Microsoft office 2007 pro installer and key

Make sure your system spec's will run it and also your OS is up to date with updates,xp is sp3 and vista is sp1, I am testing sp2 and it
has fixed a lot of problems with vista,it should be released to public
around April. If you are try to run from a download and not the disk,it could be a bad download.

If you can, watch what the error is when installing and post it.
