C4180 has message saying remove and check color cartridge which prevents use of machine.
So checked with HP website and apparently its a common problem.
So, armed with capful of vodka and a cotton bud I cleaned the terminals on the cartridge, including around the print head, and the contacts on the machine.
I had to do this three times but eventual success, and now working a charm.
    Good luck

it appears that there may be dirty contacts in the printer as well, i changed the black cartridge and it started working, just luck i guess

Had an old HP G55 that had not been used for a while and needed cartridge replacements. When replacing black cartridge I got the Remove and Check Black Cartridge message. HP recommended cleaning carrier and cartridge contacts with water (pretty stupid, HP) and that did not work. So I cleaned same contacts again with GOOF OFF paint remover (just a dab will do ya). Reinstalled black aftermarket cartridge and G55 unit went into alignment and now prints fine, thank you very much.

HP 6210xi Officejet suddenly stopped with ALL lights blinking (including LED panel) with message that the color cartridge was not intended for this printer (it was an HP 97 - right item!). Changed the cartridge then noticed black cartridge was fading. CHANGED THE BLACK CARTRIDGE (HP 94) and all is well. Note: the cartridge access door safety switch seemed to be getting a bit sketchy... wonder if that contributed to the event??

SOURCE: remove and check color cartridge

Sounds like the contacts are dirty. A cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol might help.

SOURCE: says to remove and check color ink cartridge

Take out cartridge and clean the contacts. On the printer and on the cartridge. Mine did that and there was a speck of ink where the cartridge meets the printer contact. Actually, it was a defective cartridge.

ASKING INSTALL COLOR CARTRIDGE

Check if the cartridge was inserted correctly (right slot) (remove it and insert it again)
Check if the cartridge is original and the sticker was removed. Turn off your computer, and your printer. Start up your computer and after your printer. Try again.

If the problem continues, insert the old one cartridge (which was removed before) and see what happen...

If stop asking for install color cartridge, you have failure on your new cartridge

    Color cartridge wont print

The color cartridge is defective. Sometimes, when the printer detects a refilled cartridge, it "marks" the cartridge as defective hence the refilled cartridge will not work on any printer.
