I just purchased a Pavilion dv7 4165 lap top.I was told I should create a back- up disk for the system in case the computer encounters a virus and I have to dump everything.I was told it would take around...

Linda, press the Windows key and type recovery. The disks are not really backup, per sa. The disks are needed in case your hard drive fails. The system disks are shipped in a D:\ drive, fine if the drive works, but not helpful if the drive itself fails.

If you do not find the recovery disk program, look in accessories and system tools.

If you still cannot find it, go to HP.com and look under support. HP has free support and they can help you.

My DVD-RW was working fine. I got a malware virus and had to do OS recovery. data was all fine and everything worked great. I updated all drivers. There was a lot of dust in unit and caked around internal...

Now that the malware has been removed, unplug your DVD-RW completely(power & IDE cable slot) and start your machine. If you have any junk file cleaning software, run it and shut down. Reattach the DVD-RW and also update the driver too. Use a CD-DVD cleaner of a reputed brand to clean the DVD-RW drive by following the instructions of the cleaner. Enable DMA/UDMA support for this drive. Reinstall your CD/DVD Burning software if you are using one. Make sure the region is kept blank for the DVD, do not change it...........sodeep

Windows not loading

Sounds like you have a nasty virus that has corrupted your harddrive

so that means that the recovery portion is corrupted as well

you need the operating system and reinstall everything

MY DVD PLAYER ON MY COMPUTER WILL NOT READ INSERTED DVD-RW IT SAYS IT IS A DVD RAM

There are three DVD types: DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD RAM
Your computer must be able to read the DVD format or type that is inserted. This is not something where you can just download a program to change. It is in the hardware for your computer. Your computer tried to read the title track of the DVD that you thought was "DVD-RW" and it could not read it but based on the signature that it read thought that it was in "DVD RAM" format.

Solution: This computer will not read that DVD. Either get the information on a compatible formated DVD or find another machine that has DVD RAM capability to read it.

I keep getting a security alert that says I have 4 virus

That security alert is most likely one of the false positives that are running around the internet.
They tell you that you have a virus and then want you to pay them to get rid of it where in actual fact the only virus you have is them.
Try downloading, installing and running "malwarebytes" I have used this application many times to rid machines of the nonsense you are seeing.

Dvd burner dvd+rw and dvd r problem

Hey Bruce - In your first post you said DVD+RW works which would make sense. In your comment you said that DVD-RW works which would not make sense. You've got to be sure. I'll you what it is supposedly direct from HP/Compaq:

Your PC will " supposedly do the following":

CD, DVD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW. These as I said are straight from the horses mouth. You can check for yourself.
