Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

Washer Stops/Starts when filling with water

My Calypso, purchased in 2001 from Sears, continually stops and starts when filling with water at the beginning of the wash and rinse cycle. This happens sporadically, though is now happening with almost every load. No error code is displayed, but the timer never changes. When I say "stops and starts" I mean in split seconds, so the water never fills and the machine doesn't continue, like it's stuck in the cycle. We have pulled the machine apart (husband is quite handy and knowledgeable) and have had Sears repairmen out several times. No answers or suggestions from them - and if they think I'm going back to Sears for a replacement washer they're nuts. Any suggestions? If not I may be forced into braving the world of crappy washing machines currently on the market. Thanks!

Thanks for the info SearsTechToo....We did have the control board replaced by Sears. I think the Sears repair techs know the way to our house quite well. Unfortunately, that didn't fix the issue. Sorry, I should have posted what we've already tried. A new pump was also tried, but that didn't fix it either. We have had many issues with this machine, though after reading up on the experience of others I feel pretty lucky. It is my "rule of thumb" not to buy the first generation of anything. I broke that rule with this machine, but it doesn't seem the next generation was much better. We've opted to dump this thing and get a new machine. Not an easy choice since everything on the market appears to be problematic. But I need to do laundry and the local laudormats are just not a good option. Thanks for the input!!!

Looks like part 8571359 the control electronics is out and guess what? Can only get through Sears and Whirlpool. This is why you cant get an error code, it isnt working well enough to choke one out. You know this is hard to say but a Oasis has its issues but at least it is still on market. I would if hubby is handy to find a used machine and pull the part. It is a chance but cheaper than 500 bucks to have a tech come out and fix.

My Calypso washer at the start I hear water filling tub. Then it stops filling and hear a moderate humming noise. I replaced water pump but still doing the same. Please help. Thanks

The problem is not the pump. IT appears that the water control valve is bad or the voltage that controls it is changing and then the valve stops working.

Frigidaire (LTF2940E) Washer starts, stops, starts, stops...

The cycle doesn't advance When the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • It may be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinse water. See There's no cold water.

Kenmore (Calypso) Elite Washing machine shows LD and LF!

LD means long drain and according to the manual your drain hose could be clogged or kinked.
LF means long fill. check your water hoses and the screens to make sure they are not clogged. Had that happen to me once and i had to change the hoses. several months later same thing happened and it was the motor pump part # 8054968, this you can fix yourself.

Starts to fill and then stops, and the cycle continues on.

Jmars, under the consol there is two pressure switches. One controls the fill and the other is back-up incase the other fails. It sounds like your water pressure switch is tripping too soon. Try putting the washer into a self test mode by pressing in this order soak--soil level---soak--soil level. The machine should enter a test mode. Let it run it's test and see if you come up with any error codes. The pressure switch is the one on the left under the consol. It will be marked OPR, the part number is 8054766. The consol will lift up by using a putty knife under each end, pushin on the clips and lifting up. The back panel of the consol is removable. back
