How do i remove old thinset?

I removed a large border of tiles and now i have to remove the thinset. I started using the Dremel thinset remover wand, but it's too slow and time consuming of a process. Because the area is small, renting a large piece of equipment won't work without damaging good area. The area is about 12' long x 9" wide. I've considered cutting out the hardibacker down to the sub floor. Does anyone else have suggestions?

The best way to go in that size area is to rent a Hilti or comparable demo hammer and use a 3-inch wide bit. Make sure they give you a new, sharp bit. Adjust the angle you hold the chisel to the floor to where you get the most thinset off on each pass but don't damage the base floor. This will depend on how well the thinset has adheared to the floor.

I have a Saltillo tile balcony and the tiles are popping. There are no expansion joints, could that be the cause?

who ever installed it probably didn't use a tile underlay like wonderboard or hardibacker. Also for areas like that you have to get the good thinset mortar like FLEXbond and the other thing too is Saltillo is not very user friendly when it comes to installing if you're not fast because its so porous i literally sucks the moisture from the mortar and there for doesnt bond to ur surface. If the thinset is thick and dry it aint gonna work. ALSO WITH SALTILLO YOU MUST HAVE 100% COVERAGE WITH THE THINSET.. Hollow tiles or no thinset under corners and what not just going to pop up. I butter the floor AND the back side of the tile when doing that type of tile. It's not very flat so there for you must have alot of thinset mortar under each and every tile. good luck. hope this helped. I been doing custom tile for 25 years so i got ya on this. Who ever was the installer lacked some knowledge on Saltillo. Tear it up and get something nicer.

I installed bellavita glass tile 8x16 im having issues with mortar stickig to it and holding it on wall.. why?

Your not troweling enough glass thinset onto the wall. The thinset should be creamy and troweled evenly most people hold the trowel to flat or use to small of a trowel you also could lightly coat the back do the tile to give it a good mechanical bond

My apprentice used grout, intead of thinset to bond 250 sq ft of quarry tile to concrete. Is there a away to fix it? without pulling all the tile?

Grout is a non-adhesive concrete material that is made with sand and cement, with colorants added.

Grout will not adhere tile to any surface

The good news (if that's possible) is that the tile should be fairly easy to remove, and the grout will be fairly easy to scrape off the floor. Break one tile out of the way, and see if the others can be pried up easily.

Looks like you have to start over, sorry for that.

I was a contractor for 30 years >>> we laid tile for about 2 years and then shifted to other trades >>> I know from experience that the big disasters become great stories a few years later >> every contractor has those stories.

Tile over a cracked cement floor

You can get a crack membrane to put over the cracks. First use a primer on the floor, this is a primer just for this application, then put membrane on top of primer. these products can be found at home depot or lowes or any tile store. Also do not use cheep thinset. the better thinset is more flexible and will absorb any movement. The cement board would not work as they will move or flex and cause the grout to crack and tile to loosen
