You have a build up inside the washer. When it gets wet, it smells. When it dries out, the smell goes away. To solve this, first use 3 tables (one package) of AhFresh, or washer magic, or whirlaway, set washer on tub clean cycle if you have that cycle, or if not, use the hottest and longest cycle you have. Run cycle with no clothes. Now, to prevent this from reoccurring, make sure you use only ONE TABLESPOON of detergent or less per cycle, and only ONE TEASPOON of fabric softener per cycle if you use it. These washers use only a very small amount of water per cycle, and you must adjust additives accordingly to prevent odor and other problems. This is the number one problem people have with their front loading machines, and is 100% preventable! NOTE: You probably have soap residue left in your clothes. Try washing them with no soap once with to see if you get any suds in washer. You should see none if there isn't any remaining residue. Bath towels are usually just used to soak up clean water off your clean body. Don't use soap when you wash them. They don't need it.

Forgot to mention that you should check and clean out the filter, as a build up there can lead to odor problems also. (behind the acess door at the lower left on the front of the machine.) There will be some water in there. Try to drain it out first with the small hose next to the large filter knob.

Tip

Eliminate washer Odor

To clean washer add 1 cup of bleach while washer is being filled with hot water and run entire small cycle. DO NOT add clothes. This will help to eliminate odors and any stuck on dirt/ grime on the sides of the drum before washing clothes. I'm not an expert, just an experienced clothes washer for over 30 yrs. ,

I have a sour smell coming from my washer that does not seem to go away, what is the problem? I have seen many other postings on the internet about their having this problem, seems to be the washer.

After the odor has been removed washing habits need to change so it doesn't return. Washing machine odor is caused by

1. Overuse of detergent. Use no more than 1 tbsp of whatever detergent is used (unless washing soiled clothing).
2. Using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle. Dryer sheets or dryer balls are better options. Dryer sheets can also be overused and coat the inside of the dryer with siliconized chemicals that cause clothing to retain odors. Sensors inside the dryer can also be affected. The sheets can be torn in half or thirds
3. Using mainly cold water for washing is fine but makes preventive maintenance important. A hot wash or soak as your last cycle on wash day will help to dissolve residue.
4. Many front loading washer have a filter/trap that will catch debris. A partially clogged filter/trap can cause draining problems and odor. Save money on appliance repair by cleaning it yourself. Consult your owner's manual for instruction.

Bacteria causes odors. Try running a load without any clothes on HOT and add a cup of bleach to the soap dispenser. In the future use the hottest water the care tag on your clothes will allow. Use bleach as often as possible. If it's a front load washer, make sure you are using HE detergent. Non HE detergent will suds up and the suds could potentially remain after the wash and create an odor. If you don't like to use the hot wash or bleach on your clothes, then you may need to run a load once a month as described above. There is also a slight chance it's coming up from the home plumbing. Make sure the home plumbing is draining fast enough, but ultimately the bleach you use in the washer will run down the drain and help keep it from causing an odor.

Kenmore Washer Odor

Meoser,
I've been selling the only available all natural washing machine and towel mold and mildew remover online at smellywasher.com since 2006.
It's now also available at Ace, Tru Value, Hardware Hank and Do It Best hardware stores. One bottle provides 24 treatments and guarantees to remove mold, mildew, or any odor from your washer. After the washer is cleaned it also safely and easily gets rid of the mildew smell from any towel or clothing that the odor has transferred to.
The dark, moist environment of your clothes washer is the perfect place for mold and bacteria to grow. See: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5408971n
We can't change that environment but we can stop the food source for them to grow buy reducing the amount of detergent used and stopping fabric softener use. Go to the blog page at smellywasher.com to read advice on the cause of and cure for washing machine and towel odor.
