drop feed lever could be loose or broken,, since the machine is a babylock I would suggest that the machine be checked to find out what's wrong for sure
the lower shaft (hook) gears should be no problems for any trained tech to replace and should not need any shafts to be removed. the pattern selector is usually sold as a module and factory set which is why you are getting the high quote as there is no guages or info on these settings. if you have the parts now have you gone back to the original repairman as i assume you have already paid for some of the work and this would be cheepest option for you. the last option is to send it to babylock as they have a repair techs who would be able to sort it out for you
I found that the tension setting of 1 worked. The main problem was the machine had thread wound around behind the bobbin. I had to take the plates that are under the foot out, clean out the thread, oil the machine and use a spool of thread that had more weight than the little spool I was trying to use.
