i have the same exact problem.

the screen only worked for about 7 months then it stopped working.

    this sucks, please help!

is there any way that i can fix it myself?

  • tcholt Dec 29, 2008

what that link doesn't tell you is that there is an expiration on the extended service based on the serial number of the notebook. i just called the hp and the notebook i have is covered, but expires at the end of this month (today is the 29th). so, hurry up and call. if yours has expired i would escalate this with hp until the fixed it because with all the information they saw fit to put on the web site, they left out that little detail....

    best of luck!

Hi Folks,
First, of all, let me inform you that you need to get the Product Number of your Notebooks which is printed on a white sticker and pasted at the bottom of the notebook indicated with P/N if it is installed with AMD Processor.
Now, check if the product number of your Notebooks are listed in the list of Product numbers available in the link below :
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01300427

If your Notebook Product Number is available in the link provided above and if the Notebook is purchased and currently available in US or Canada, you can get a free repair since HP is offering free repair for few Notebooks installed with AMD Processors.
You need to contact HP Chat Support and provide the symptoms of the Notebook and also let the support technicians know the steps you had performed so that they will be able to collect the required details from you and setup a free repair for the Notebook.
You can find more details about this free repair program from the link below :
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01087277&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Hope this helps...

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Im on a laptop and the back light usually just flickers but the screen has gone dark and i have to use a flashlight to see the screen.

Replace the Inverter, rickeyjsmith.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. An additional light source is needed.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Lamp = Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale in physical size.
(Average size is 3 to 5 inches long, and half the diameter of a No.2 pencil)

An Inverter is used to provide power to the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

90 PERCENT of the time the Inverter is the problem.

Which is a Good thing.
The Backlight is located inside the metal frame that hold the LCD panel layers together.
Usually on one side of the LCD screen.
{Some LCD screens require Two Backlights}

Replacing a Backlight is a job for a trained repair person.
The LCD screen is a composite of layers.

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Vikuiti1/BrandProducts/secondary/optics101/

A lot of times the LCD screen is replaced for Backlight replacement, because some LCD screens require this.

Backlights cost more than an Inverter, and of course an LCD screen costs much more.

This is an example of an Inverter for an HP pavilion dv2000 series Notebook PC,

http://www.buy.com/prod/new-usa-lcd-inverter-hp-pavilion-dv2000-dv2100-dv2200/q/sellerid/23962916/loc/101/217117085.html

The above is ONLY an example.
An Inverter MUST be matched to THE LCD screen.

Stating Pavilion dv2000 is only stating the series.
The EXACT Product Number is located on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number

Also, there is an HP part number on the Inverter.
Match the HP part number to the listing for the Inverter you are going to purchase.

A reputable seller will list THE HP part number so that the buyer will purchase THE correct Inverter.

How to replace an Inverter in an HP Pavilion dv2000 series Notebook PC;

1) Service Manual

I'm going to use the HP pavilion dv2000 CTO Notebook PC as an example.
The Service Manual is the same for All of the Pavilion dv2000 series of Notebook PC's,

On this page click on the file name >
HP Pavilion dv2000 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide.

After you click on the above link it may take up to 30 seconds, or more, to see the first page.
In the meantime you will be viewing a blank white page.
The PDF file is downloading in the background.

In the Bookmarks menu to the left, click on the + sign to the left of >
Maintenance and Service Guide.

Click on the + sign next to > Removal and Replacement Preliminaries
Read up on Anti-Static Precautions

Now go back, and click on the + sign next to >
Removal and Replacement Procedures.

Scroll the sidebar down, and click on > 5.12 Display Assembly

Direct information on replacing the Inverter is on Page 152.
(Page Number Box at the top of the PDF file, to the right of the blue Down Arrow)

I use a computer pick to ease up on one side of the rubber Screw Covers. You may have a similar device you can use.
If you are careful with the rubber Screw Covers, you can reuse them.
There is a contact cement on the covers.

Lay them down glue side up on a piece of paper.
(They do like to stick to the computer pick, and your fingers, however. Giving you a 'heads-up'.
Try to keep the glue side from picking up debris, however)

If you need guidance, no matter what it is concerning this procedure, please post in a Comment.

One more thing that pertains to the HP pavilion dv2000, dv6000, and dv9000 series of Notebook PC's, that I think you should be made aware of,

Hp pavilion dv2000 lights switch on but boot or

Hi

Thank you for your query

Please try the folowing

1) Remove ALL wires and then press and hold the power button in for approx 20 seconds

2) Plug everything back in and then rerty

This may sort the issue out however from what you are descrbing, if there is no boot or display it is highly likely the motherboard and/or the CPU is faulty

I would recommend that you book the PC into a reputable PC repair shop if the above does not work

If this has been useful please leave postive feedback/vote/testimonial - Thank You Again

First pull motherbord from cabinet some times motherboard is grounding with cabienet.
Then pull cmos cell from motherbord for 10 minutes.
Refix RAM memory.
Reconnect ATX power connector to motherboard.
Then check.
If still same issue then open processor fan and processor then clean dust from all place in mothebord.

i m in Hong Kong. The stupid HP repair center charged US 90 just for inspection!!!!! They they said the whole motherboard had to be replaced, thts additional US 630 dollars, the thing is just 1.5 yr old. They also said i don get to keep the broken mother board after replacement. This is simply irresponsible, unethical, sleazy and UNJUST!!

Thanks. right now the computer is fixed for US70. when i hv time, i'll open it up and see if i can figure it out how it was fixed. The shop suggested tht the computer wont last too long. This is such bad quality for HP... Sorry, i hv to do the following for other victims to find this easily:
