HI-SPEED USB HOST CONTROLLER NEEDED!

I just purchased the Alera Technologies DVD-R Quad Cruiser. When I plug it into the USB port on the front of the computer, a window pops up with this message: There are no HI-SPEED USB host controllers installed on this computer. The USB Mass Storage Device will function at a reduced speed. Where can I get the hi-speed controller I need to make it function at 4x speed? Further, I noticed an insert in the blank DVDs I bought... There are "firmware" upgrades to several brands of internal and external drives available at this portal: # Unfortunately, Alera Technologies is not one of them. Is "firmware" just a different name for a driver? Is a "controller" the same as a driver? Do I need this upgrade for XP, or is it an upgrade for the DVD software? This is all very confusing! Any help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated! I don't know much about this DVD burner thing... Thanks, Big Al I have this problem please help

Your computer has USB 1 ports and the message is telling you for optimum performance the more modern USB 2 ports would be better.. it is down to what you have I'm afraid

Firmware is the managment programs etc that are written to the chips in your device these special chips can be written to to improve the programs eched into them any firmware update if you can get it is better for your device

Neither firmware or controller are the same as a driver.. a driver is the peice of software code that enables communication between your device and your computer

The firmware upgrade if available is for your device not your computer or windows version

Recently, when I insert a USB flash drive into my laptop's USB port, I get the message: This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a HI-SPEED USB 2.0 port.

Your laptop has USB1 port and the USB 2 message will appear if you plug an USB 2 device into this USB port.
You maybe able to upgrade the USB port to USB 2 if there is a BIOS upgrade available from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site.
If not you maybe able to get an USB 2 PCMCIA card to install into the PCMCAI slot on your laptop.

control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you should see a yellow question mark? right click to reinstall drivers or ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

If your Device Manager shows an ENHANCED USB Host Controller, the system has High Speed USB (USB 2.0) capability.

Types of High Speed USB (USB 2.0) Host Controllers

· Intel Enhanced

· SiS Enhanced

· VIA Enhanced

· ALi Enhanced

· Standard Enhanced

· NEC Enhanced

The system shown has onboard Intel High Speed USB (USB 2.0) with an NEC High Speed USB (USB 2.0) PCI card installed.

The key word is ENHANCED. If you have an ENHANCED USB Host Controller then you have High Speed USB (USB 2.0)

All other types are USB v.1.1

hope this helps

What is a hi speed usb host controller and how do i install one

Hi,
Your mainboard it? not equipped with USB 2.0 ports. If you want to upgrade your system to include Hi-Speed USB support, you must install an USB 2.0 PCI Controller. USB 2.0 allows much higher data transfer rates than the older USB 1.1 standard, using the USB 2.0 port you will copy much faster your data or access information from your flash drive, for example.

If this is the solution for your problem, please rate my post, otherwise give us more details about what you would like to know.

Regards,
Andras

When i plug in my memorycard adapter into the usb ports .the baloon says i need a hispeed usb host controller.

The memory card you have is for a USB2 configuration and the USB port configuration or port you are using is USB1 configuration.
Try a different port or check the manual for port layout or description.

VIA needs to stop making USB chipsets... lol... Are you sure you have USB legacy support enabled? Moreover, the default Windows XP drivers are not error free when used with a VIA Rev 5 USB Host Controller because it's actually a VIA Enhanced Host Controller. Every time I have USB problems with the VIA Enhanced Host Controller I go to there website, download the driver, and it usually fixes the problem.

USB 2.0 (VT6202, VT6212, VT6214/L)

Moreover, I have plugged in a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse and Windows XP could not detect it until I installed Microsoft Intellipoint; if you can believe that. Try also installing the mouse drivers as well...
