Ensure the timing is set on the correct revolution, 1st cylinder piston should be top dead center, with the inlet valve closed and outlet valve towards opening. Timing mark on pulley should be at center or at 0 (zero).
If engine has a mechanical distributor, the rotor should be pointing towards the number 1 spark lead, in the correct firing order.
Ensure valve clearances are correct while cold. Then readjusted when warm
