Hello Nick london
Welcome to fixya,

You said, you have a Hotpoint FZA34 frost free freezer, brand new since 3 days.
Book says place on number 3, but I find on 1 the food is perfectly frozen.
Also, I do notice that even on number it comes on and off quite a bit....could the dial be faulty?
Please be so kind as to address my 2 points here.

1. The dial should be on #3 as the direction show.
You may feel that the food is frozen enough on the # 1 setting.
But the colder the food the better the storage.
Tests show that articles stay better and longer when frozen at specific temperatures.

2.You said, you notice that it comes on and off quite a bit.
And this is because the temperature control is set too low on #1, and should be on setting # 3 as you read in the directory.
Everything seems correct!

Remember that GE has their engineers testing all of these particulars.
And they spent a fortune getting it right and researching these things hoping their product will be the best!
I feel you will be fine if you continue to follow instruction manual!

Let me know if you have any more questions
Thank You for using fixya.

FREEZER NOT FREEZING PROPERLY

There could be a large list of things that cause the freezer to warm up from the temperature it was before. The most likely reason is you probably have a defrost problem. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat and the defrost control are all things that may have failed. If your model is not a frost free let me know. Look inside freezer for a layer of frost building on the rear wall. If your refrigerator is not defrosting it will be a short time before the fresh food compartment begins to warm. To extend the time your refrigerator and freezer can keep food safe defrost by placing a bucket of hot water inside the freezer and close the door. Please place food from freezer and fresh food compartment into another refrigerator or cold storage area. By keeping doors shut as much as possible the refrigerator and freezer will last up to a week this way before defrosting again, Sea Breeze

Sorry to hear about your problem. Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice on it. If not. you have other issues
Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer
3. Defective defrost sensor
You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

My refrigerator isnt keeping cold for like 3 days & now the freezer is starting to not work because the food is starting to unfreeze? what can I do?

this sounds like a defrost problem remove the rear panel in the freezer and use a hair dryer to defrost the coils. after you have the coils clean ,put cover back on and then order a defrost heater and a defrost thermostat for your model number at searspartsdirect.com

Food defrosted in top of upright freezer

Hello,

Sounds like a defective defrost timer

If its a frost free upright freezer and the evaporator is frosting up with a snow like frost you have a defrost problem.. defrost thermostat, heaters, or trimmer

Dirty condenser coils are not the problem. It's most likely the defrost timer or defrost heater. The heater should come on about 3 times per day to melt the ice on the evaporator coils. If the defrost timer is not turning on the heater or the heater is burnt out, the coils will freeze up

Hope this helpout and Good luck

The fridge is not cooling the food and especially dinks .the cooling setting is on max

Good day,
General problems.
1. The coil in the freezer is frosted up, preventing air from being
sent to the fresh food compartment. (defrost system not working).
Three parts. Defrost control, defrost thermostat, main defrost heater.
2. The fan motor in the freezer is not working, or working properly. Same results as #1.
3. The damper control that vents air from the freezer to the fresh food compartment is not opening (pneumatic style).
4. Lights stay on when the door is closed.

Best we can do without a make and model number.

Freezer side of refridgerator doesn't freeze foods properly and also makes only about 10 cubes a day. food side works fine, it's a Hotpoint model #HSS251FMB WW

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Make sure fridge OFF freezer OFF ... then turn mains on. ONLY turn freezer to max, after 30mins put fridge to 1care ... this should overcome the problem of the flashing lights. When both nice and cool turn settings down. it worked for me
