Question about Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

Canon S5 IS Flash

Hi, my camera has been working perfectly for almost a year now. Now my flash doesn't work. When I hold the button down half way the flash icon just flashes on and on as if it we're building a charge on the battery like it usually does. I've tried several sets of batteries and a variety of shooting modes.

Reset your camera to factory settings.

If still you are having the same problem, then you camera will need a professional repair service, since the internal flash board is damaged.

My camera often takes blurry pictures. Doesn't matter if the flash is or is not used. I press the button half-way down, allowing camera to focus, then depress the button all the way down, but it...

This must surely be a technique issue. If you hold the camera at arms length you will most often get movement when pressing the button all the way down. Whenever possible, use the view finder. With the camera held firmly against your face, frame your shot and press the button down half way - as you do. Then keep the camera held against your face and squeeze the button down fully. Breathing technique helps too. With the button half way down take a deep breath in, exhale and half way through the next inhalation stop, hold your breath, check the frame is still as you want it then squeeze the button down fully. Always try to squeeze, rather than press, the button.

The flash on my Canon S5 IS has stopped working, is there a way of repairing it? Thank you.

Contact Canon Directly. They will have you send it in and they will look at it. if it is less than a year old and no signs of abuse they should fix it free of charge.
It will also be quicker working with them directly instead of trying to go through a repair center..

Thanks.

Flash not working

Before you give up on the camera:

There are many setting that can affect whether the flash works or not.
You may have inadvertently set something that is stopping the flash from working.

Get out your User Manuals and use the index at the back of the book.
Look for something about "Resetting the camera".

This will reset the camera to factory specifications.
Then see if the flash works.

If that does not work ... recharge the battery and try again.

If that does not work, the flash is likely dead.

The flash pops up, but it doesn't flash

It is normal that when you press the shutter button half the flash won't fire because you're focusing on a subject upon pressing the shutter half way

It's just like you are locking a subject upon pressing the shutter half way

Flash Problem

Hey tombston,
An error code of 99 is Canons general error code for this camera, and they suggest cleaning the lens contacts and/or removing the battery and then reinserting it. If this doesn’t work I would try resetting the camera to the default factory settings, and directions on how to do this are on page 35 of your camera manual. If this doesn't work I would have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. I have included a link to a PDF download of the camera manual in case you need it. I hope this helps!

Can't take photographs when flash is on

Hi
The powershot s5 IS does in fact have some strange behaviour issues especially on the first rev firmware. For example if you take 15-20 flash photos consecutively without powering down your camera the flash recycle times will increase to about 15sec, so you'll have to wait about 15sec before you can take another flash photo. The work around is to power down the camera and then turn it back ON. Another strange behaviour is manifested by its inability to lock focus after taking a "no-flash" photo, then popping up the flash and trying to take a flash photo. Again the work-around is to power down the camera, pop-up the flash and then power it back up. Confirmed these behaviours in two other cameras of the same model.

How to power up a Minolta Program 3500 xi flash through a Canon S5 IS?

Im sure that model of Flash. Does the minolta flash fit the hot shoe of the Canon?
If it does then I would first try seting the flash to manual mode and adjusting that.
Let me know if the Flash does not fit and I will try to help you from there.
Take Care,
Caleb
