Get into your bios (usually by hitting del key as sys. is booting up). See if your hdd is detected in the settings. You can also put a screw driver on the hd (while pc running) with the handle end to your ear. You will be able to hear the drive spinning if it's working. If you don't hear it, detect it in bios or feel it spinning then try another "good" hard drive. A bad drive that's not working should give an error message like "no drive detected" or like that. Because you have a black screen (if no error messages) then I would check your power supply since you say your ethernet light is flickering. How about the sys. fan & cpu fan, are they working? Are other rom drives lighting up? It could be a few different things hopefully one of these will solve your problem.

The hard drive could have failed..Try a hard start to see if it will react. Do you get any beeps?? a warning beep or beeps may indicate a hard drive failure. Try to get into C-Mode set up. click alt/cntrl/del as you turn on the set.or alt/cntrl F10. Hard drive failures can happen if ther is to much written to the drive or just a plain 'Crash'.

The screen is black and the power light is flashing not constant and I don't think the hard drive is turning

If the screen remains black and does not show the BIOS window when powering up, coupled with the lack of hard drive power, then it sounds like you have a motherboard failure.

If your fans also do not come up, then that will confirm it.

Screen went black...rebooted, computer seems to

Remove the battery and disconnect the power adapter for about a minute.

connect only the AC then boot it back up. If you can see the Compaq splash screen and still unable to load Windows, re install OS.

If you could not see the splash screen, too bad it could be a motherboard issue,

Hope this helps.

Okay, this is unfortunately this is one of those times I call check the obvious first, so even though you have already thought of these things please check them again, first is the monitor plugged in? Is it on? Is the brightness up? Is the cable that connects the monitor to the computer plugged in? (That is usually the blue plug, or a tan plug). If you have verified that all of these things are in there correct place, I will need to know one more thing before I can continue troubleshooting. Is your monitor a Cathode-Ray Tube Monitor (Very big monitor that is usually associates with older computers) or LCD Monitor (Very thin).I will need to know this in order to continue troubleshooting.

Disk no longer powers up

You may have a faulty power adapter, you need to check if it has +12volts & +5volts with a multimeter. You might be able to borrow a power adapter to test the drive before you pull it apart.

To test the hard drive.
Remove the hard drive from the case and connect it directly to the IDE cable (or SATA cable) and the power connector inside your computer. Depending whether the drive is on a IDE cabe on its own, then the jumper can be set to either Master or Slave.
If the drive is on the same cable as your existing hard drive then the 320Gb drive should be jumpered as a slave drive.

When you boot up your computer check the BIOS to see if it detects the 320Gb drive, if OK then let it boot up into Windows.
If you then click on My Computer you should see your C: drive as well as your 320Gb drive (might be D: drive). You should be able to Explore/view the files on this drive, if so the drive is OK then the power adapter or the hard drive USB box is faulty.
