good Authorized firm. We would up sending equipment to several service
centers around the midwest to help cover the very busy times and tech
vacations. All of them were very good and very careful with the equipment.
Good Luck!

Not yet but primarily because the local service shop that I had such a
bad experience with is an "Authorized Sony" repair center; I
wouldn't go in there again to have a flat-tire fixed.
OTOH, Sony may suggest someone else. Good idea.

cities and I know they offered house call service in the Detroit area a year
or two ago. The factory techs are very well trained and Sony doesn't want
to take a chance on tarnishing their reputation. Sony equipment is a little
different than some other brands. Someone who isn't familiar with it might
have to guess but a trained tech should have no trouble. I used to manage
an AV repair center and we occasionally needed to send things to several
Sony centers. They were always good at the repair and they used to use a
flat-rate schedule that was very competitive. They usually warranty their
work, too.

Perhaps. I've tried that in the past with mixed results. One
serviceman was great, fixing the TV efficiently and, after that, even
doing diagnostics over the phone to minimize his time at my house. We
treated each other as informed adults and I used his services for
years until I moved to a new city. The other shop (where I took the
CD player for warranty repairs) scoffed at my suggestions and did
major unnecessary work. (BTW, I am quite knowledgeable about these
things having published several articles on digital-audio interfacing
and having built audio DACs, etc. of my own design.) If I had to pay
for that repair, I'd have made a major howl.
Right. Seems like a lot of work and, perhaps, $$ investment for a
$500 TV from which I've already had nearly 8 years of service.
Thanks. Wanna visit? ;-)

your state's referral number at consumer affairs, since you seem to have no
other relatives? It may be a long shot, but you may be well advised to do some
thorough research about the shop (just find one that doesn't have any or very
many complaints against it in years) and use their services.
Also, using the solution you obtained here about what is causing your problem
with the TV, you may be able to tell the repair shop you finally choose that
you suspect "an integrated circuit in the MPX section of the audio portion of
the TV is bad" and then you need to either have the entire chip assembly
repalced or components nearby that are causing the problem. I assure you, if
you show you are on your guard with that little bit of knowledge then the
repair shop may be inclined to be helpful to you. However, instead of
complaining, get informed and take a stand when the information comes your way.
I believe the customer is a part of the solution.
My best wishes go out to you.

OK. I did not accuse anyone of trying to screw me and, yes, I'd like
someone to help. OTOH, I still have no solution.
Agreed.
Hmmm. I have no "physically fit" buddies who have vans or pick-ups
here in Manhattan.
I wish. No such info is available.
I respect the knowledge and skills of the competent tech. However,
finding one and arranging the service remains a problem.
The only service tech in this neighborhood that I have dealt with did
2 repairs on a CD player, both under warranty; he did unnecessary
repairs and billed the manufacturer for more than 50% of the list
price of the player. (I would have fixed it myself but I wanted it to
remain under warranty.) Before it could go again, I dumped it. I
have no experience or recommendation for any other tech.
Any one here in Manhattan? Anyone know someone reliable in Manhattan?
Where else do I ask? BTW, the tuner has been flaky for about 2 years,
so I use the cable box or VCR tuner. I would like this fixed, too.

Come on now lighten up a little you are painting a very bleak
picture of service repair shops and techs with too broad of a brush. After
all, the very folks you have spoken badly about are the same ones that you
are asking help from on this newsgroup. Not all shops and techs are out to
screw you and bang up your equipment. Be advised that home service is
going to cost you a lot more and many shops will discourage a home call
on a 27" television with what could be a moderately priced repair the
travel, pick-up, and home repair charges will probably be as much as the
television repair price so why don't you offer to take your physically
fit buddy (who owns a van or pick-up truck) out to breakfast or lunch and
have him "help" you take your television to a service shop and save yourself
a lot of money and save yourself the worry about the service shop "goons"
banging up your equipment
oh, I have to sign off soon, I am scheduled to go on a home service
call with one of my tech "goons" he is bringing a case of beer and we
are going to raise hell and have fun throwing the customer's television set
out the back of the service van.
Seriously now, you should talk to some of your friends and acquaintances and
find out where they get their electronics service done they will be
glad to tell you
... unless they are tired of you be a whiner and always being so negative.
Show a little trust. If you go around thinking that you are always getting
screwed you will probably get what you are expecting. Another
pointer, if you are looking for help from television service techs, it would
be better if you did not generally insult the whole lot.

sorry to hear you have apparently had some negative experiences. However,
puting down the entire repair industry is not the answer either. You certainly
have the right to complain about the person(s) or people that you feel screwed
you to us and to the proper agencies near you.
I find it offensive as a repair technician for over the past 15 years
that someone like you would just say that about any and every technician, just
because you have had some negative experiences in the past. That is not fair
for you to say about people who might actually service you in the process.
Technicians are human, too. Many of us are just as human as you and
actually have just enough understanding to fix the equipment, not build new
parts or build a new unit.
The function of a technician is to make a service call (for a fee- to
compensate the tech. for time, travel, gas, insurance on the vehicle, vehicle
maintenance, and licensing the vehicle for use as a tech + licensing the
technician, which is the right way to do it nowadays, until such time that even
more rules are imposed on us by our wonderful government), then we actually
either take the unit to the shop per customer's request, or we actually try
unit out per customer's request, then take it to the shop and leave the
customer with the claim check, while we collect the service call fee for pickup
of the unit.
After the TV leaves the customer home, the set is delivered to the shop
intact (I use blankets to cover me TV's when they are waiting for the tech to
work on them the same day), the set is placed into a waiting to be repaired
section.
The tech. gets into the set, then confirms the diagnosis (I believe I already
made to you that the MPX chip is bad, possibly along with other components
nearby), we then contact you and give you the total price for fixing the unit
and what the problem is, as well as how long you can expect the repair to take.
We then order the parts that day (even if we can get them locally in some
cases) and we make certain that the original factory OEM electronics parts are
replaced exact for exact and fully functional as an exact replacement of your
old, no longer working part that went bad. You are given the old part back at
the end of the repair. You actually see the work that was performed because the
old part is evidence and you can see the recently repaired TV as fully
functional after a 2 day minimum test period.
For removing the old part and installing the new part, there are a series
of specific procedures we absolutely must follow. The old parts are removed
with desolder braid and a solder iron, especially when removing non surface
mount device PC mounted IC's. Since your chip is a surface mount chip, a small
board with it on tall legs is removed (I have done a number of these repairs
successfully with this method). A new chip with board is replaced and soldered
in, connection by connection. To say the least, the repair is very intricate
and requires magnification, the proper equipment, the correct amount of time,
and the proper skills involved to actually do the job.
After the part is replaced and the unit is fully closed up again, the set
remains on a bench, connected up and testing for two days to make certain the
parts are replaced correclty and that nothing else with the set happens
throughout the entire time. At the end of the testing, we contact you as the
set plays on. We then make arrangements to deliver the unit at your earliest
convenience.
The set is loaded into the vehicle and is returned to you. We make sure you see
the set working in your home according to your preferences. We collect the
remainder of the bill for having provided the service and we both go our
seperate ways, hopefully with all concerned very happy.
If there are any other things that occur, we notify you first before we do
anything else. You are the person that is the first to know when something is
up (in very rare cases). I have had a situation in which a set came in for no
power. We got power restored and we found the set had an audio problem, too.
The estimate had to be revised because of two distinct problems found and we
notified the customer before proceeding with work. we even made the sure the
customer actually got the estimate in writing with an explanation of
specifically why we determined this to be the case.
All this said, in my 15 years of being a technician, I am not out to screw
anyone to make a few extra bucks, but I know that there are people that are out
there. I will not deny that you have had problems in the past.
All I ask of you is to get your information in a newsgroup like this, so
before you call the technician, you have some knowledge of what is up before
you have the chance to get burned. If you show yourself to have some technical
knowledge, it is very unlikely that people will be as inclined to try to take
advantage of you. I will also ask you not to judge all technicians, so that we
don't have to give you our opinions of all customers.
Hope the information helps.
Have a great day.

Thanks but those days are long past.
OK. Now to find someone who knows what they are doing and will come to
the house. Most around here send a goon or two and haul it in. If it
wasn't broken before, it will be when it gets to the bench.

Home service IS certainly available but you will pay extra for it
so if you want to keep the repair price down at a reasonable level you will
want to take it to the shop yourself. This is only a 27 inch
television while the Sony Trinitron sets are somewhat heavier that
most, I regularly move them around my shop by myself you should eat
some Wheaties and get your television to a service repair shop yourself
or pay the extra $$$ and have the in-home service if that is what you
want Pay the money and take your choice. The Sony Trinitron
televisions are worth repairing as long as the CRT is in good shape.

I understand. Although I have built and repaired tube and SS audio
equipment and I have done minor repairs on TVs over the years, I
have a very healthy respect for the lethal voltages therein. I would
love to have a pro do the job.
Are you kidding? I can barely slide it around to the other side.
Lifting, carrying and/or otherwise getting it to a shop, even if it
was next door, is impossible. What happened to the days of in-house
service? (Yeah, I know but there are docs who still make house
calls.)
Right. These babies get tossed since the only home service is
delivery of a new one. It's a terrible waste.
Solutions?

It is the very same fix and the same part (SBX1637 MPX Module Board) that is
needed to possibly correct the problem you are reporting.
This or any television repair is not a repair job for a novice. There are
dangerous electrical shock hazards inside your television these shock
hazards may still be present even when the television is turned off and
unplugged from the AC power.
This repair procedure should be fairly reasonably priced at most repair
shops. Take your television to a shop or two let them evaluate and
listen to the sound so they can make an educated guess about the repair
cost. It is possible that the muffled audio symptom that you are
experiencing with your television could be cause by something
different only a repair shop will be able to sort that out for you.
It will definitely be worth getting your nice Sony Trinitron properly and
safely repaired at a service repair shop. Good luck.

SBX-1637-xx this is probably the cause. Costs $10 or less from most
suppliers.
