Put the temp select switch on HOT, start machine. If water comes out check the flow amount. If no water flow, replace inlet water valve. If there is water flow switch to COLD, start machine. If water comes out check the flow amount should be approximately equal or slightly more than flow on HOT. If no water flow, replace inlet water valve. Move selector to WARM, start machine. Now there should be twice the flow of water than there was with HOT and COLD temps. I suspect it is the HOT side of inlet water valve that has failed because machines usually rinse with COLD water.

Silt, sand, something from deep water well has migrated past exterior washer hose screens into washing machine. Older Kenmore HD Series 70 top loading washer. How to fix?

probable but unlikely
the control valve for the water ( hot or cold ) has a diaphragm in the main flow with a small hole in it to act like a pressure regulator
so when the solenoid shuts off the water , water flows through that small hole and locks the diaphragm firmly on the seat
I suggest that the low flow is because that diaphragm has been compromised and is not opening correctly for full water flow
take it apart and clean it out or replace it

Water underneath my Sears Kenmore washer. Ive had

It could be splashover depending on what you have in the washer (different load sizes). Sometimes the water just splashes over the sides. But I have seen pumps that leak out their seal intermittently. I would suspect the pump.

Only a trickle of cold water coming into washing machine

If there is no other restriction, the water should flow freely from the hose into a bucket as a test. If good, then it must be a restriction in the solenoid valve. Some can be disassembled and cleaned but the valve assembly is not expensive to replace.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

I'd also see the following PDF on Whirlpool / Kenmore top load direct drive washers. It has a description of how they work and troubleshooting sections.

The problem sounds like one of the water control valves or switches, (assuming that you've verified that the hoses to the washer are turned on.

No cold water. only warm or hot. When I shut off the hot water, then no water at all.

A couple of things that might be wrong:

1. kink in your cold water hose that will prevent the water from flowing into the machine.
2. the cold water faucet is turned off. My daughter experienced the same thing but it was with the hot water. The master valve was not turned on so there was no water going into that hose at all. Hope this helps.

Water is always hot

Turn off the water from your hot water valve at the wall. See if you get any hit water then. If you do it must be comming in from the cold water side. If you dont get any water to flow the water valve or selector switch is at fault.
Please rate me as high as you can and thsnks for using fixya.
