External Hard Drive problem - Why God!? Why!!?

Ok, i have a problem that doesn't need to be a problem and i'm hoping that I can get some help here cause I'm at my witts end. I have a Maxtor personal storage 3100 External hard drive. Earlier today it worked perfectly when i shut my laptop down. When i started it back up, my computer couldn't find the EHD. I checked it out and saw that the green light in front was just blinking, not a constant light quivering like it used to. I checked the power supply and nothing seemed out of whack until i tried a different power cord, the light started slowly blinking...weird. I need some help from anybody that can help me! I have all my music stored, all my pictures, everything on this. I don't want to lose all these files. If there is any way that I can fix of salvage my files, Please let me know I lost the power cord to my maxtor hard drive. Seagate Tech. sent me a new power adapter, a week later, free of charge! Plugged it in and got the blinking green light, then orange, now it doesn't work at all. whats the Deal? Open it up? thank you.

Sure..the power is not the key issue..what you might consider, is calling a local computer fix it shop, and ask how much to recover that data..then, you may be well advised to consider an online back utility, such as you can find here.

When I click the power button on my harddrive the power doesn turn on. I removed all of the plugs and nothing happened

If your not getting any power use a multimeter on the hard drive power cord,, probe orientation doesn't really matter you just get a negative reading if it's reversed. One probe down the middle one of the metal on outside of power adapter. Can't get a probe down middle just stick a paper clip and just probe to that. If it is getting voltage then the dc jack inside the hard drive enclosure could have broken loose take something pointy and gently push the jack on the hard drive if it wiggles it's broken and needs to be re soldered. Comment back for more assistance if needed, General solutions below
Check the following
  • With the drive plugged in on powered on place your hand on it should be able to feel it vibrating (if no its not getting power or dead)
  • If power and vibrating put your ear to the drive (repeating and squealing are bad, crunching sound is generally ok)
  • With the drive plugged in and it sounds ok and it's vibrating[platters are spinning] right click on "Computer"/"My Computer" select manage > Disk Management, locate your drive if it is listed try to initialize it
  1. Right Click drive, properties, hardware tab, select drive, properties, volume tab and click populate
If it wont populate or doesn't show at all in storage manager at all either the drive itself is bad or the control in the external enclosure is bad. You can attempt to remove the drive from the enclosure and plug it in directly into the computer but this tends to void it's warranty. If the drive works however you can simply buy a new enclosure for about $12

Hello, I formatted my external hard drive Samsung G2 HX-MU050DC and i lost the drivers. I can not find drivers. Can you help me please? Because i can no longer read the files that are on it. Thank you...

According to the microsoft site your external hard drive which is the Samsung G2 HX-MU050DC doesn't need any additional software it is automatically installed when connected..Maybe try to connect it to other USB port I preferred you connect it at the back of your CPU..If this doesn't work try to connect your external hard drive to other computer if it still doesn't work. sad to say but the problem is your external hard drive..

I plug my hard drive into my computer and nothing happens i have also tried it in another computer and it is the same

Hi there!
Have you tried using another USB cable? If you haven't then try it first and if that doesn't work, it is possible that your external HDD is busted.
Hope this helps.

Simpletech external hd 250 Gb is not reckon by vista (though was before) but works ok on XP. USBs are ok. It appears in disk management (says it is working properlly but no letter asigned to it) but does...

You need to partition it and format it inside of disk manager. You can do this by right clicking on the device (the gray box next to where it said there was no letter assigned)and selecting initialize.

My external hard drive doesn't work in any computers, when you plug in the external hard drive in the computer it doesn't work but the external hard drive is running.

If you have plugged the external drive in to two or more computers, and it doesn't work in any of them, then there is a problem with the drive.

The actual HD may be OK, and the electronics in the case may be faulty.

You would need to try the HD on its own, or in another case, to find out if it's OK.
