The problem is simple. Try inserting your old in cartridges. If the old ones work, the ink cartridges are defective. Contact Dell and get these replaced. Otherwise the printer has a problem. try cleaning the metal contacts of the ink cartridge and the ink carrier.
Was your replacement cartridge a new dell product? If it was, the sensor on the prnter should recognize it as new and reset the indicator to full. If, however, the cartridge was refilled, remanufactured, or otherwise an off brand, the ink indicator will show it to be empty. Just ignore and use the printer as normal -- it will print just fine, but you may need to press the select button to get it to start printing the first page.
