Sometimes the ribbon connector becomes disconnected from the connector on the motherboard. You can fix it by removing the connector inserting a slim piece of plastic and reinserting the connector.
1.If your unit is not printing check the ribbon cartridge to make sure it has not run out.
2.If the ribbon appears silver or gray install a new cartridge. Also make sure the ribbon is advancing in the cartridge.
3.Next make sure the black lever in the center of the carriage is pressed toward the paper. If not, press the black lever toward the paper to lock the daisywheel into place and reset unit by holding down the "CODE" key, while holding the code key down press the "REST / Q" keyand release both keys.
4. Try typing. If problem still exists contact an Authorized Brother service center. You may do so at 1-800-284-4357 or by visiting our website.

I've uploaded a pdf with the instructions that came with my typewriter to install the ribbons at YouSendIt.com. The link is good until November 29, 2011. If you'd rather I upload this elsewhere (Flickr or something), drop a note here and I'll see it.
1) Check whether if your windows is installing new updates, sometimes YM does crash when window is updating. If you are using Win7, then just go to:-->Control panel/ System & security/ Windows Update/ Change setting. In the setting panel, you will see " Important Updates " box selection. Change it to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download & install them". Restart your pc/laptop, then try log in to your YM. 2) *This step won't be necessary but won't do any harm too, go to:Control Panel --> System & Security --> System --> Advance System Settings. In the " Advance " tab, click "setting" at the " performance " column. Select " Data Execution Prevention ", select " Turn on DEP for all programs & services except those i select", Insert your YahooMessenger.exe(C:/Program Files/Yahoo!/Messenger/YahooMessenger) into the add list. Restart PC/laptop & try to log in to YM. 3) If those won't work, uninstall your current YM, restart your pc/laptop, then try installing a new one.
