Archos 504 80gb keeps restarting

My archos which i have had for nealy 2 years now seams to have sprung a fault. when i drag and drop files from my pc (large'ish files) it starts copying and then after a couple of seconds freezes, drops the pc and restarts itself.
i have tried recovering and reformating the hard drive. i've updated the firmware but it still does it. I have noticed when it freezes you can feel the hard drive hunting for something over and over again, and then it restart's itself.
please please please can anyone help it's becoming very irritating

If I try to copy an album onto my archos 504, the first few tracks go on but then the copy process freezes. The archos makes the same grinding noise as sskaraf and when I disconnect it from my PC, it begins to run the update and then completely freezes with the more grindy noise. Playback of some of the files also causes the freeze and grind situation to occur. Have tried the firmwire update and various resets but with no joy. I still need to run a scan disk but my last attempt at all that kind of thing wasn't successful.

Try resetting the device, don't worry you won't lose any files on the device. it is the little brass bubble directly on the circuit board by the battery terminals. hold for at least 10 seconds.

then try the device as normal.

if that doesn't work, run scan disk on the device as a "pc hard drive" select auto repair.

if that doesn't work, try using a program other than windows explorer to copy the files. specifically, i've had very good luck for fast copy. the interface is translated from japanese, just select the proper directories and hit the "excute" button, took me about two minutes to figure that one out. there is also tera copy.

if that doesn't work, try using a syncing software, i recommend allway sync n' go, free for personal use, actually you may want to try this before the copy software. remember that if you change direction in the sync arrow you willnot be copying files back from the device to your computer. i find this to be very useful.

if that doesn't work, i'm really sorry, you're just going to have to use tech support, call on a tuesday evening when it is really slow, but get ready for a wait. i recommend sitting infront of your computer while on hold, at least that way you'll have something to ry more research on.

good luck!

How do I transfer my sermons from my laptop to my Archos 101?

2 ways:
1. Copy sermon files from laptop to USB drive, then mount USB drive to Archos, go to files, external drive, copy files to ARCHOS from USB drive.
2. Connect laptop to Archos with USB cable & copy or drag files from laptop to Archos

Note: You will then need a reader / Office Suite/ or other app to view the sermon files. I assume the files are .doc files. Excellent app for this is Docs to Go.

My archos is showing recovery code 101

It is indicating that there is a hard drive fault. Here is another users suggested method to clear the fault.
Following some extensive use I switched it on one day to find that it hung on the Archos home screen and kept going in a loop. Luckily I could see the red HDD light flickering so knew that the Archos was trying to do something and that the HDD was recoverable. When I entered into the recovery mode I found that I had an recovery code (101) which indicates a HDD fault.

I used the following steps to recover the HDD:-

1. Connect the archos to the PC using the USB cable (the unit will start but will need to be shut down again by pressing the power button)
2. Press the power button and the 'lock' button together for a few seconds and you should get a basic recovery screen
3. Scroll down to repair disk and select
4. Click on done and wait for a few seconds and you will see the archos as a drive in 'My Computer' (Note that this does take a few minutes)
5. You now need to back up your data, movies, music, widgets etc as the next step is to format the Archos HDD which will wipe it all.
6. Disconnect the Archos, turn it off and then turn it back on again by pressing the power and 'lock' buttons together.
7. Scroll down to format disk and select. The Archos will now delete all files on the HDD and you will get a message asking to connect to a PC and install the update file. This is the firmware file that can be obtained from the Archos website. You'll also notice that the recovery code has changed from 101 to 108
8. Connect the Archos to the PC, wait for a few seconds and you will see the archos as a drive in 'My Computer' again.
9. Drag the firmware update file from your PC where you've downloaded it to directly on to the root drive
10. Click 'done' on the Archos and it will begin to update the operating system.
11. Once this is complete then there should be an update successful message, select done and the archos should restart giving you the nice bubble screen and asking if you want to enable USB.
12. Note that the Archos is now in a 'factory built' condition so you'll need to adjust settings etc according to your preferences.
13. You can now start the long process of transferring your files back to the Archos.

5- Now that you are on "Repair" select it to validate your selection
6- The unit will go to "Plug the unit etc…" plug it with the USB cable to the computer

Your unit should restart with a fresh repaired, updated system like day one.
Good luck!

My Archos 605 wifi will not accept mpeg4 files

Do not use windows media player. Go to my computer and then open the archos icon or in some cases words that have the name you named it or a605.Then go into the harddrive from there go to videos and drag and drop your videos into the folder inside the video folder or just drag and drop it. If it is on system settings Pc Hard Drive or any other setting other than windows mmedia device you have to manually update your abclibrary.

DOWNLOADING TO MEDIA PLAYER

1st of all, your Archos needs to be set to PC Hard Drive mode in the settings.
Then when you plug it into your pc, it will just show as a new drive.
You can then simply drag and drop movies, music, flash games, files etc.
The Archos accepts avi files with mp3 sound, however if you purchase the package which allows you to watch DVD's onthe Archos, then you also have a whole load of codec's which means it accepts Real Player files, Dolby Surround sound, you can copy 4.7 gb dvd's straight to it and much more.

Downloading

In the settings menu from the front screen, set your Archos to PC Hard Drive instead of Windows Media Player.
It will then just show as an external drive when you plug it into your pc and you can drag and drop files from the pc.

Sync with Windows media player 11

Yes i know syncing is the easiest way to hook up archos to download files have you tried manually like drop & drag the files into the video folders? Some video formats work even in the new archos series some don't & you have to buy plugins. I personally didn't like using windows media player it reminds me too much of itunes

Once you have downloaded the file to your PC simply connect your archos to your pc using USB cable provided, select PC hard drive mode, and simply copy or drag and drop from one destination to the other. Your Archos usually appears as J:Archos604WiFi if you have a built in card reader if not it may appear as an earlier letter in the alphabet.
