Re: Scanning with lexmark x2500
This is a function of the optical character recognition (ocr) software, not the scanner. Most scanners have bundled software that include ocr and retail ocr software is available. Good quality originals are necessary to minimize the amount of manual corrections and the ease of making those corrections is what you want in the ocr program or you end up better off retyping a document if 100% accuracy is required. Graphics are a consideration when scanning mixed documents so don't rule out cutting and pasting those separately if necessary in Word. Take the time to master the software if this is a common task for you keeping in mind that better software usually merits the extra cost if it saves you time. Don't neglect the scanner settings for resolution as the software works only as well as what you present it to recognize. A Google search on scanning will help you on specific tasks as there are whole books on this subject. ~Steve Medley

Make sure the Lexmark OCR scan software (used for scanning documents for editing) is installed on your computer. The scan software is available only on the installation disc that came with your printer. No downloadable driver is available in the Lexmark website. Just insert the install disc into your hard drive to install the additional software on your computer.
you need to have ocr software to convert the text from a scanned image to readable text. try going to microsoft office website and downloading the software. can also try the scanner manufacturers website for it.
Find the "menu" button on your printers keypad and push it. Use the up and down areas on the printers keypad to advance from choice to choice. Find the option that says something similar to "scan settings" . Push the "ok" button or the "enter" button on your printers keypad to open this option. Continue scrolling with the up and down arrows and using the ok or enter keys on your printer and locate the "scan to" choices. Set up your software choice for scanning text documents and pictures. Most people want to open and edit text documents in software like "Microsoft Office" in your computer. Choose a photo editing software installed in your computer to send pictures scanned on your printer to. When these settings are set and saved, turn on both the computer and printer and try scanning from printer to computer again to check and see if the problem is solved. If you experience any other issues, pleas clarify what they are and I will try and help you solve this right now before I leave for work.
It depends on if you have the full software installed. The MP160 documentation indicates it came wth ScanSoft OmniPage SE. Open MP Navigator and choose this program, you can output the scan as a text file. If you did a custom install, you may or may not have installed the program. If you omitted the program, do a new custom install. OmniPage is an OCR program and will output to a number of formats (you will choose File, Save as) after scanning. Word can import RTF and most other choices as well as .doc files.
If you don't have the software disc, the software can be obtained from this URL: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=13368
Alternatively, there is a free OCR program (simpleOCR.com) that will do the same thing. However it doesn't handle text in columns (newspaper or magazines) very well.
Sometimes companies only support only the basic drivers. The OCR software is on the CD (s) that came with the printer. Suggestion. Try to order the original CD from Lexmark., or search Ebay for programs that have OCR capability. You can use OCR programs from other vendors as long as they are stand-a-lone programs. Just make sure you have the original disc so as not to infringe on copyright privileges.
Note: you can buy OCR programs. Check Ebay and Amazon. They are usually better that the programs that come on the OEM disk.
