Question about Fuji FinePix S5000 Digital Camera

Problem with focusing on Fuji finepix S5000

Hi, not sure how it happened, might be after I dropped it from about half meter on carpet. Everything works fine including zoom, but all pictures are unclear and out of focus - in and out doors with or without flash... Not sure if I am imagining that but sounds as if the camera is not taking enough of time to focus before taking picture.
Would be very grateful for any advice - had the camera for about 4 years now, is it worth repairing?

Many thanks
Blanka

I would say not because: The focus mechanism is a contrast detection and is built into the firmware/CCD of the camera. There is no focus benchmark that the camera can fall back on, ie. rangefinder type camera that knows infinity setting. Or more of a possibilty is that an internal lens has broken loose from a mount and the focus just gives up as it cannot attain a lock, like when youare too close to a subject. Either way it is a professional repair unless you want to dive in. Just get yourself a set of jewelers screwdrivers and another digital camera so you can take pictures of every phase of disassembly for refference. As a 3.2/6.4 camera, there are cameras out now that are more advanced and less expensive that a repair, which would more than likely be a flat rate of $150+ and you would still have an older camera. Kodak makes a very nice camera such as yours for under $200.

After the basics, try dropping the camera on a carpeted area from about 2-3 feet. It worked for my Fuji A500 and 90% of the responders on the link. Everything on the web said it would cost ~$100 to fix. I was in the process of researching new cameras to buy and had nothing to lose by dropping it on the floor.
The error may be caused by debris in the zoom mechanism preventing it from working. Dropping the camera loosens the debris and voila!

Focus Problems

If the problem is caused by damage to the lens unit ( the usual problem because auto focus mechanism is electronically / mechanically very robust ) then you have to have the lens unit replaced and this might be uneconomical : most expensive component in the camera is the lens assy. plus it is supplied with CCD sensor block; all in all this is an expensive part.
