My Maxtor External Hard Drive, is not working properly, about a week ago, We moved our home office into a new room. And since then, the external has not been working at all, takes about 3 hours to scan the different files, and for some odd reason, just isnt really readable. I just ran a diagnostic test on the external itself, and recieved the code: D7D5954F

Unfortunately, we did not, the Office files, yes, we make like three copies. But the pictures, from various cameras that we use, are gone. The upside, we only lost two months, the downside, we lost two months. I have since, been helped but only to reformat the drive. (Waited to do that, as a LAST resort.)

Sounds like the disk surface is unhappy..did you have this backed up I hope.

If it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken then yes. But if it is the hard drive itself that is broken then no.
From what happened I'm thinking that it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken. That being said, you can easily buy one without the hard drive online. When doing this be sure you know what kind of hard drive is in your Maxtor enclosure. This is important because you need to be sure that your hard drive and enclosure are compatible. Check to see if it uses SATA, ATA, or PATA connectors and then buy the corresponding external hard drive enclosure.
Once you have bought your new empty external hard drive enclosure, it is simply a matter of opening up your Maxtor enclosure and moving the hard drive inside to your newly purchased enclosure and connecting it to your computer.
To avoid problems like this in the future, look into "cloud based storage" to back up all of your data securely online.

Sounds like the drive isn't working, but the next step is to try it on another computer. If it doesn't show up there either, then the drive is faulty.

Sorry, Maxtor prog on poota is currupted. Have you recently downloaded programmes? When updating, some progs have a nasty side-effct of hitting some other programmes, not all the time,just your important ones?

You will have to uninstall and reinstall Maxtor prog, Not sure there might be a repair facility, not sure but it worth a try before uninstalling all.

External hard drive stopped working


Hmm any sort of nise from the disk is not a good sign. try using the unit on another Pc. if you have the same issue you might have to take it for warranty.(if you have warranty)

Maxtor external hard drive failure


If you really want those files, try DriveSavers.com. They do wonders with dead hard drives (known to have recovered files off a burned hard disk). But it comes with a hefty price. So check their website, http://www.drivesavers.com/.
