Question about Hitachi 43UWX10B 43" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergence problem My Hitachi has a convergence problem AGAIN. It had the same problem about 3 years ago and the convergence board was replaced under the extended warranty. Luckily I watched the technician so I knew where the board was. I removed the board and RK42 is obviously burnt. My question is, everything I have read here says replace the two IC's and the resistors, but since RK42 is obviously burnt, can I just replace that and not the IC's, or do you think a faulty IC fried the resistor? I'd rather not replace the IC's if I don't have to.

Hitachi convergence problem

You need to re-solder the circuit board that contains the STK convergence modules. They're on the center circuit board attached to an aluminum heat sink that's about 8" long and 6" tall, about dead center in the circuit board. You may be able to recreate the problem (hour glass effect) by gently moving the heat sink (which the modules are connected to). This gives the hour glass effect on the picture and the advanced convergence screen. This is an indication that the modules pins aren't solidly connected (meaning soldered) properly. Remove the circuit board and clean the old solder off & resolder the modules pins to the circuit board reconnected the board and then retest by again pushing on the heat sink. Take the appropriate cautions working around the high voltage of the set & use a non-conduting piece of wood to push the heat sink when we doing tests.
Best of luck, hope ya fix it.

The left side of the picture has red and green stripes and ghost images. The right side does not have this problem, but the picture is not quite right. The convergence chips were replaced two years ago and...

That sounds like the convergence problem I had about a year ago, and like you, I replaced the convergence chips and that fixed the problem. It's cheaper to replace the chips if you do it yourself, but maybe not if you send it out for repair. If you can find an exact replacement board, that would fix it too, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to last longer. The advice I read on replacing the convergence chips in my rear projection TV was that they would last 2 or 3 years and then need replacing again. So you're within that range.

If the picture was good prior to the 3D images, I would fix it. The convergence ICs either have poor connections or are defective. The IC is an STK392-110. There may be 2 inside the set. If you have this repaired, expect a labor cost in the $200 range. Request that the ICs be replaced rather than the board changed. This will maintain all of the internal settings and require only part replacement not a complete re-convergence adjustment.

Keep us posted.

The convergence Ics need replaced. In Hitachi, resistors and sometimes a coil needs replaced as well. The convergence/deflection PCB is available, but, the cost of that board is higher than having a servicer come to your home and repair the unit to component level. If you are not familar with this circuit, then call a servicer. Have them replace both ICs not just one. Make sure they are repairing to component level and not replacing the board. Hope this helps.
