Problem with GE Profile 25.6 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Thru-the-Door Ice and Water - Stainless-Steel

refrigerator has strong chemical (like alcohol) odor....side-by-side GE. the smell is in both sides and has contaminated all of the food. i have thoroughly cleaned the appliance. What is this?

    • OK....I have tried all of the suggestions (except removing the liner--can't afford a new fridge)....there MUST be a better solution. Refrigerant leak??? Ice maker???

The alchohol type smell is definetley a refrigerant leak in my opinion unfortunatley if it is in your cabinet it becomes a nightmare to track the leak. The leak if it were in the cabinet would be from the small capilary line that you can see from either taking the lower panel off the back of the machine or removing the rear panel on the inside rear wall of the freezer. I would suggest you call a compressor repair technician to perform this repair. If you have any further questions message me back. Thank you

Hi there,
First of all , empty out the freezer, leave if off until it fully heats up to room temperature, Clean it out with Vanilla essence and turn back on. Allow the freezer to reach operating temperatures before putting anything in and before you do check to see if the smell is stil there.
Now if it is it means that the freezer's insulated internal wall is damaged and it has allowed seepage out into the bottom trapping some old juices (blood and anything else which may have leaked during a defrost cycle) which have leaked out and constantly breeding underneath the freezer. If this is the case either, find leak and seal it with some good quality mastik sealer not silicone !! or: buy a new one , unfortunatly if it is damaged repair may not be the best solution depending on its age and brand. Source: smells inside freezer and refrigerator even after thorough cleaning, smell is even penetrating food and making it taste bad

the only source for odor in a refrig is from food. check to be sure that nothing has gone bad in the refrig section as well as air circulates back from the fresh food section as well as the freezer. if you stil cant find odor source try charcoal or unscented kitty litter in a small container to help remove bad odors..
