SOURCE: Problem with a husky lock 340 serger. Wheel on

My Bernette did exactly the same thing as you describe and when I took it to the mechanic there was a gear right inside that had split on the main drive path. It was a nylon gear and it had cracked right through the middle - my machine was about 12 years old at the time.

After one store advised I junk the machine, I then priced the part from Bernina head office, spoke to another mechanic and he was able to send my machine to another mechanic he knew who could pull the thing apart quicker because he'd done the repair before. I was warned it would cost $270-350 but I love the machine so said go ahead.

I'd suggest you take your husky to a local husky dealer for a quote on this, it does sound similar.

SOURCE: My serger won't start. Motor is running but

Hi, On most of these newer machines they have a clutch that you engage to fill the bobins.
Please make sure that the clutch is disengaged for normal use. If this is all OK see that belt
is attached on motor.

I bought a used white serger model 523, the hand wheel won't turn?

Since it is a White, am assuming it is a mechanical machine. If so, most likely it has languished without use or TLC and over time, the oil has turned to glue and then varnish. When this happens, it actually freezes the moving parts--a very common problem with older machines. Sergers actually require more frequent cleaning and oiling than sewing machines.

If you are mechanically minded, you can try carefully removing the case. (Remember how it came apart!) Then while gently rocking the handwheel and using fresh, good quality serger oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil, apply only a couple drops every place that metal parts rub metal parts. Avoid oiling synthetic parts and belts. The machine may even have built-in oil ports, but applying directly to the joints and knuckles will also work although not quite as efficiently. Avoid soaking it with oil and be sure to wipe off any excess. Then direct heated air from a handheld hairdryer into the interior of the machine. This may take multiple repetitions to get it loosened.

Or you can take it to a repair shop.

Riccar serger hand wheel stiff

Could very well be seizing due to lack of oil or buildup of lint, etc. Sergers generally require frequent oiling with fresh good quality oil (consult the manual). Continuing to force the motor to run when the machine is seized can burn up the motor.

Brother 1034d handwheel stuck

the best thing to do is take the machine in to have it checked.
sergers are nice & very useful, I have a babylock serger with the jet-air
looper threading systerm, and I use it alot when making clothes.
I even used my serger to serge the ends of fabric that I haven't used yet
so the ends won't fray.

since the machine has been setting for 20 years, it needs to be serviced
the old grease & oil have probably turned the gunk. the servicing can also tell if any parts are damaged

Babylock Imagine serger was working fine, now light is only thing working, tried another foot pedal and still won't start? Any thoughts?

Can you manually turn the flywheel (towards you) - does the needle and loopers move then through the normal sequence?

If the answer is no, then its most likely something in the drive gear path, possibly a nylon gear inside it that has failed. This can be replaced but probably means a major dismantle of the internals.

You may want to take it to a baby lock dealer and see if they confirm that this is the fault.

I had this gear replaced in my Bernette 334D and it cost $250, part was only $25 of that charge.

Imagine BabyLock Serger. The hand wheel only moves a tiny bit and the gears grind. I cannot remove the needles because the needles are in the down position and the hand wheel does not move enough to raise...

I suggest having a professional look at it, if you don't have one near by. You can try to fix it yourself, but if release the gears the machine willl most likely get out of time and not sew properly.

How to release gears on each gear are 2 set screw, usually a hex head. just turn it counter clockwise and it will release.

But remember the machine will have to be timed, which is a bit to difficult to explain over text chat.
