Looks like u got a problem with ur DVD device 'Driver'. try to reinstall the drivers. they should be on the recovery disc which came with ur laptop. or if u dont have a disc try to find the driver from Toshiba website. let me know if u still could not fix it. i can provide u the driver and its installation procedure.

Burn disc

First of all your computer needs to have a DVD R or a DVD RW

it needs to be capable of burning DVD's

although if you just want to burn something that is for music or file storage up to 700 Mb's of storage, then you use a CD R burner. Most laptops and PC's come with them

If you have those and you want to know how to burn dvd's or cd's using your burners, then your gonna need this program

Welcome Active@ ISO Burner users Active@ ISO Burner 2.1 10 4.0/5 --> CNET Download.com is the safe and trusted provider for Active@ ISO Burner 2.1

My rewriter is broken drawer ha been snapped off

This is Dell Support>Dell Dimension E520 Desktop PC>Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dime520/en/SM_EN/index.htm

I invite you to left-click on - Specifications

Scroll down to the heading - Drives

Available devices - 4 Serial ATA drives - CD/DVD drive.

Serial ATA. Looks kind of confusing, huh?
= SATA

IDE has been changed to PATA.
(Integrated Drive Electronics)
It has been felt that there would be less confusion this way.
PATA = Parallel ATA
SATA = Serial ATA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Drive_Electronics

The Dell Dimension E520 Desktop PC comes with a dual layer DVD burner, and a DVD drive.

(DVD burner will have DVD-R/W or R/RW on the front usually)

You need a SATA DVD R/RW drive.

Myself I use Lite-On optical drives.
Why?
Cheap in price, high in quality. I have one I have been using for over 3 years, with no problems. Price was around $35 US.
Not advertising for Lite-On.

It's a dual layer, DVD combo drive. Burns CD's, and DVD's. Has the HP LightScribe technology. If I use the HP disks for LightScribe, I can make labels for the disks, or burn a label right on the middle of the disk itself.

TIP: Everyone looks for a f-a-s-t burner! The Lite-On I have is Fast. You Do Not want to burn disks in a fast mode.
Better quality of copying, or recording is done at a slower speed.

Should your optical drive not come with burner software, I recommend Infra Recorder.
It's Free, and works Very well.
(I like it better than Nero)

1) Computer unplugged from power

2) Open the computer case side panel (Side panel release latch is on top, at the rear. In the Service Manua,l you can click on Removing and Installing Parts. Scroll down to Removing the Computer Cover)

3) TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case, to relieve your body of Static electricity.

(Your body carries Static. Static will fry out computer hardware components. Computer unplugged from power you are safe. TOUCH the metal frame, your computer is safe)

4) Removing and replacing an optical drive.

In Removing and Replacing Parts, you can scroll down the page for details.

(Approximately half way down. Under the heading Removing the Drive Panel)

I find the instructions 'Less Than'

The Drive Panel is the Front Cover.
The Front Cover has to be removed, in order to remove either optical drive.
This is done by releasing the blue Slide Latch.
The blue plastic slide, on the side of the optical drive bays.

The plastic tabs are depressed, and the blue plastic slide goes towards the rear of the computer.
This allows the optical drive you wish to remove, to slide forward, and out.

I slide the drive I want forward a little, so that I can get my big hands on those cables.
You will have a 7-pin Data cable, and a 15-pin power cable to remove.

Installation is the reverse of these steps.

Goto my computer, right click on your cd drive, and click properties. From there, click on recording, and make sure that Enable recording on this drive is checked. Also, What software/application are you using to burn the disc?

Cannot copy files to DVD disks

First of all you should have the recording tab ON. Have you tried burning using Nero instead of dragging and dropping? This may solve the problem.

However, if you prefer to drag and drop, try setting the write speed to a slower setting, even if the dvd burner has faster write capabilities.

1. I do not think it is a hardware issue.

2. You can try replacing the IDE cable, but if you can read the contents of the disk it does not suggest a communication issue between the drive and mobo.

3. I do not think that the burning software is to blame, when you drag and drop you are actually using a windows based burning software that is installed with the operating system.

4. set up your files to burn through nero, let the software do the work.

I had the same issue with my dvd burner, although slightly different error messages, solved it by using nero instead.
