I have a few suggestions for you regarding this scenario.
First of all, if the unit is in good working order currently, you don't really have a warranty claim. With your factory warranty expiring soon, I totally understand your concerns once the warranty runs out. Typically, they will do the absolute cheapest method to "fix' (like using refurbished parts, using 2nd quality new parts) the PC to get you outside your warranty period. Then they will happily offer you repair options that make a new PC look pretty appealing.
There are a couple of media options for severe cases of negelct, two of which are in magazines I subscribe to. If you send your explanation of events to them, frequently they are able to shame/leverage/embarrass their customer support into helping you.

If none of these options work, you might protect yourself with an extended warranty. While I don't buy warranties on everything, I think you should try to protect yourself once the factory warranty runs out.
While Acer certainly has warranties for sale, there are other options, like SquareTrade (squaretrade.com) which are independent of the manufacturer, and are usually significantly less expensive. While I am not sure how long after your purchase you can still buy a squaretrade warranty, I would recommend them over the manufacturer option.
If none of these options appeal to you, you may decide to just chalk this up to a lemon, use it as long as you can, then replace it. I don't personally recommend Acer, but this is a matter of opinion, and I think individual product lines (from many companies) are more indicative of quality than choosing based on a brand name.
