After I took the harddrive to a friends house. We discovered that the housing for the harddrive was shot and needed to be replaced. after we took the actual hard drive out and replaced the housing it worked fine. hope this helps others.

Hey, a question to the OP,

did your hard drive make any strange or unusual noises or sounds when it wasnt working?

Mine is also not recognised but it makes strange noises that it didnt make before, im really hoping this isnt a head crash

I have had 2 Maxtor 3200's for a couple of years, and this seemed to happen periodically. After enough fiddling around and plugging and unplugging I've always managed to get both my PC's to recognize them eventually.

I have now started doing the opposite of what is recommended, namely, powering up the drive and then making the USB connection. Now I make the USB connection and then plug in the drive. This has worked reliably for at least 10 times.

Remove the hard drive from the casing and connect directly as a slave drive to your PC. If it is not recognized then the problem lies with the hard drive. Use Seagate's "seatools" to check the hard drive.

If the hard disk is recognized then the problem lies with the USB convertor circuit of the maxtor box or it could be a power supply problem aswell.

If you have upgraded windows xp to SP3 the drive may sometime go unrecognized. To solve this,
by default the jumper setting of the hard disk is set to cable select by maxtor. Reset the jumper as master drive and put the hard disk back in the casing and connect through the USB port. It should work now.

Good Luck

Hi Crkinard.. i think you shuld first find out whether the problem is with the external device or your computer... so check if the device is recognised by another system... as you have been using the device dor couple of years i think yours computer's drive for external devices should have been corupted.. so check out the device with some other computer.. if it is recognised in that computert then you can easily reinstalled the software for your device again..

Utilizing all 200Gb of my Maxtor 200GB HD

Hi,

My name is Robert Bostick Sr.

I installed the above listed (200GB) Maxtor hard drive without any problems. However, this is where I discovered that all HD's will only recognize approximatly. 135GB.and that an Adapter PCI PC board would have to be installed to be able to recognize all 200GB. The remainder is not lost, but is installed like a second hard drive, but can only be used as a over flow space or for my music or photos. So, its not entirely bad. However, I want all 200. I have a new WD 80GB I could use for either my music or photos.

I read somewhere that I need a PCI Adapter for the computer to recognize all of the 200GBs. This is what I purchased on line. I purchased a "Rosewill" ATA-133 2-port Adapter with RAID.Part Number RC-200. Will this adapter solve my problem. Looking through all of your people questions Ion your Web Site I''m surprised I did not see a question like this. I guess I'm the only stupid old man out there.

If possible could someone give me a hand with this inherent situation. Also, will the Adapter PCI board I purchased work for this HD,

thanks so much for your time,

Best Regards,

Robert W. Bostick Sr.

Maxtor 3100 200GB hard drive clicks rythmically but not recognized by computer and cannot be accessed. About 3 -4 years old

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.
