I have had this drive for a couple of years now and I have had no problems with it. Now my CPU will not recognize the drive. I have switched USB ports I cannot see anything in the admin tools icon under CPU management. please help me out there is years of family photos on this external drive!
Hey, a question to the OP,
did your hard drive make any strange or unusual noises or sounds when it wasnt working?
Mine is also not recognised but it makes strange noises that it didnt make before, im really hoping this isnt a head crash

I have had 2 Maxtor 3200's for a couple of years, and this seemed to happen periodically. After enough fiddling around and plugging and unplugging I've always managed to get both my PC's to recognize them eventually.
I have now started doing the opposite of what is recommended, namely, powering up the drive and then making the USB connection. Now I make the USB connection and then plug in the drive. This has worked reliably for at least 10 times.

Remove the hard drive from the casing and connect directly as a slave drive to your PC. If it is not recognized then the problem lies with the hard drive. Use Seagate's "seatools" to check the hard drive.
If the hard disk is recognized then the problem lies with the USB convertor circuit of the maxtor box or it could be a power supply problem aswell.
If you have upgraded windows xp to SP3 the drive may sometime go unrecognized. To solve this,
by default the jumper setting of the hard disk is set to cable select by maxtor. Reset the jumper as master drive and put the hard disk back in the casing and connect through the USB port. It should work now.

Hi Crkinard.. i think you shuld first find out whether the problem is with the external device or your computer... so check if the device is recognised by another system... as you have been using the device dor couple of years i think yours computer's drive for external devices should have been corupted.. so check out the device with some other computer.. if it is recognised in that computert then you can easily reinstalled the software for your device again..
