I had a file on my DS-660 which was yet to be downloaded. The record button was accidently hit and recorded over the file. I am wondering if there is any type of file recovery software I can run to retrieve the original recording

  • rebeccajryan Oct 13, 2008

It is not a PDA - it is a handheld digital recorder Olympus DS-660

  • rebeccajryan Oct 13, 2008

Somehow my problem has been listed under PDAs when it really deals with a DS-660 Olympus Disgital Voice Recorder

  • rebeccajryan Oct 13, 2008

there is no way I can run the recorder through some type of file recovery system?

Actually you cannot retrieve the data once its is over written , you can try data recovery software to recovery ,but it might work or it might not work you try data recovery software like

http://www.getdata.com/download.php

It might work or not ....

Good luck....

I think it is common knowledge that if you delete things from a processor of any sort there is still residual info left behind. Recovery software is not cheap and is used mainly by cyber crime investigators or seriously professional IT techs. Take your recorder to your local computer repair service center(not geek squad) and see if they can flash the memory for traces of your memory. This will tell the tech if any overwritten files have been backed in the units HIMEM or may actually still be there its just not viewable or accessible by a user. Some say if you truly want to delete all traces of deleted data physically destroy the unit, motherboard, bios, dos, harddrive, RAM. Crush it, electrocute and then pour gas on it and burn it, LOL. Anyway, it doesn't cost much for them to check it out.

Now the file cannot be retrieved but in future the best option will be to lock your saved files. this is the feature available in your DS-660. In such cases if your files is locked you will have to enter password to unlock and then overwrite the file.

Thanks

What file was it? If the file has been removed or replaced there is basically nothing that can be done. Is the unit working correctly?
Thanks,
Lee

Yes I know the unit is not a PDA, That wasn't one of my questions but thank you for the fast response. Like I said you can not recover it is best to take it as learning lesson so the mistake is not repeated in the future. If you still need assistance please let me know. Please take a moment to reconsider your original rating and accept and re-rate my solution accordingly.
    Thanks,

Ds-30/ file recovery ?

Unfortunately this recorder is designed with flash memory and once you erase a file it is gone. There may be some companies (olympus is not one of them) that specialize in flash memory recovery but it is a very costly process and involves you sending the recorder to them to perform this operation.
You can go to google and search for flash memory recovery specialists.

Olympus ds-30 deleted file recovery

on your computer, you will need some sort of media recovery software. also go to options under the tools menu and uncheck delete after transfer to turn off deletion. this is usually best since you can delete the files through the recorder by the erase button

Rewind.

You can rewind and playback only. You can only record by creating a new file.

How do you edit a recording on an Olympus DS-30 dictatation machine. All I want to do is record over what I have dictated but the machine just creates a new file everytime I press the record button again....

Unfortunately with this recorder it is not possible to edit over a previously recorded file. Each time you hit record and then stop it will create a new file each time. That's the way the recorder is designed. If you need to be able to stay within the same file you may want to check out the DS-2300 or the DS-2400 as it has a NEW button on it that allows you to stay within the same file until you press NEW to start a new file.

Is it possible to stop recording without opening a new file?

you can not do this with the Olympus ws-100, you need a dictation machine that has the editing function which allows you to easily insert, overwrite, partially erase files and continue on the same file, most of the digital dictation units have NEW FILE BUTTON , you will stay recording on the same file till you press new.
Look at Olympus DS-2300. Olympus DS-33300 or ds-4000.
