Codra 29ltd clas. trans and receve only at close range

I have a 29ltd classic with a super tune and the stock mic. at close range of a 1/4 mile or less I can pick up just fine and I can send even better. But further than that I can pick up to about 1.5-2 miles but I can just barley send. When I key the mic. up swr goes to 6 on the meter and the ant lite comes on every time I key up. I have checked all the connections in the case and even took it to a cb shop who sed it all looked good just to replace the antina with a better one was using 2 freightliner antinas. I have a 9 foot coax cabel that is new ran through a wilson T-connector. When I had it tuned about a year ago it worked greate but after leting it set a whyle It doesent want to work thanks for any advise you can give me. Also what do you think about the antinas that they clame are rated at 200,000 wats are they worth the money or not? Thanks agen.

Try a different antenna. In my opinion, Moonraker antennas are the best. However they are the biggest of all CB antennas. They're smallest antenna measures close to about 40ft long. They're made for long range communication. They are pricey but well worth it. I recently got a Moonraker for my Galaxy DX2517 base station, it has a 50ft metal whip with power supply box which increases the output power. I can talk all the way to canada just using the pure power of my radio, and I live in Virginia. I'm telling you, if you get a Moonraker, you're set for life. And about your radio problem, umm, it might be your antenna, sometimes when you have a dual antenna input, it messes with the modulator and the frequency amplitude. It's best to just have one antenna.

Hope this helps!

Don't really know, but its probably a signal strength meter so you can more accurately tune in the stations.

I can receive well, but have limited output..can receive from drivers over 10 miles, but when I try to talk back I only have about a 1 1/2 mile range I got a new power mic, but it doesnt seem to help......

Could be poor antenna, or not high enough on the vehicle.

Also most truckers have had their radio's peaked and tuned.

If this radio is stock its only putting out 4 watts, which should still get you about 8 miles.

I do not know what the modulation and AM power POT's on the board of this radio are.

You can take it to a truck stop that has a radio shop. they can peak it usually for less then $30

How to reach out farther.

Well, it probably already has been peaked out. With out knowing what has been done by some one else, I cannot recommend any modifications to the radio. there are some mods that conflict with other mods.

Older side mic radios can possibly be really loud radio's. It needs to be modded by some one who knows what they are doing. Little work to the transition line, and a bit to the audio section of the radio.

CB radio's work by line of site. More range comes from less obstructions. Hight is might. If its a base station, the higher the antenna, the farther you will get out.

If its on a vehicle, just use a good antenna tune to the best SWR. Other then that, the only other thing you can do is use a linear amplifier, which can be expensive, and the radio needs to have a low dead key so it will not blow the amp.

more power will get out better, but if you are behind a hill, or mountain, or in a valley or something, it won't matter how much power you have, because your signal is line of site.

I need the manual/s for a Cobra CB radio, 29LTD Classic,ser#105129711,manufactured 5/01. Thanks for any help you might have, This radio has a built in SWR meter and I need to know how to tune it or do I...

1) push the button marked S/RF / SWR / CAL to CAL

2) Hold in the button on the mic

3) Turn the SWR CAL knob until the needle is over set to the far right of the meter

4) flick the switch (in step 1) to SWR

Your SWR reading will be displayed. The more to the left the better..

Cobra 29 ltd classic antenna calibration ??

You should not calibrate the antenna before you install it on the car!! the antenna needs to be calibrated on the vehicle that it is going to be on. Type of vehicle, different mounts, and many other variables can change the amount of reflection you will get.

j0hn9999 did a much better job but left some info out.

Take your SWR readings on channel 1, then on channel 40.... NOW, if your SWR is higher on ch 40 then ch 1, then your antenna is too long and it needs to be shortened. Refer to the antenna instructions on how to shorten the antenna.

If your SWR is higher on ch 1 then on ch 40 then your antenna is too short. You must lengthen the antenna. Again refer to your antenna instructions on how to lengthen your antenna.

You must calibrate each time you take a reading.

Make sure your doors and windows are shut when taking a reading

Make sure you are in an open lot when taking a reading as buildings, trees and other structures can cause reflection and give you an inaccurate reading.

If you adjust the length of your antenna on another vehicle and then put it on yours, the SWR will be off. It will need to be tuned again.

An external meter is better then the one in the radio, but will need to be hooked up in the vehicle you have the antenna on.

If you are not running any kind of power, or do not have a swing kit installed, and the radio is stock, the meter in the radio is more then enough to get a correct SWR reading.

Assuming you have a good SWR, either ditch the power mike or the truck.
