Not detecting I recently bought the "SimpleTech Signature Mini 160GB" (blue), and I followed the instruction as describe (usb cable, etc) and "my computer" does not detect the drive at all. I even tried to use both USB cables, still nothing

    I am using Windows XP. I've tried using both USB cables, a different USB cable, uninstall and reinstall. Error message says "This device cannot start"

    Same problem... Win XP SP3, USB 2.0 ; drive power LED (Red) is on, but drive never spins up all the way and is never detected by the USB controller.

    I am having the same problem... my desktop and laptop computers are not adding the drive to "my computer" and all of my songs and "backed up" files are on it already! PLEASE help, sincerely, frustrated.

    Same issue here.. and on Thanksgiving none-the-less. Note: i am using a Windows XP computer.
    In the hopes of getting a solution i did the following.. but so far nothing has worked.
    - Plugged both USB's in.
    - Sent a RMA email to SimpleTech for assistance but am not expecting an answer back.
    - Plugged unit into an alternate (ac) power source with USB connection.

    The unit had worked perfectly on all computers, and my Mac would only read the files on it. That was an issue I was planning on addressing in the future. Be that as it may, while in use, the unit made a strangled sound and slowly the disk in it stopped moving. I thought it was a power issue and changed comps. No luck, the unit is unresponsive. (no red or blue light) Once i plugged in the AC source, the red light would turn on, but 'My Computer' is not recognizing it. Needless to say, I need the information on the drive and am attempting to find out what has gone wrong. Any suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated!

    Same promlem, simplrtech signature mini, 250GB.
    first time i plugged to my laptop [win xp], it got recognized and started copying files into it. Suddenly got an alert pop up saying there was a problem with one of the picture files which cannot be copied, i clicked OK button and the whole thing dissapeared. anything i do now, the simpletech is not recofnised by my laptop and it is not listed in the 'my computer'
    please help

    BOUGHT, UNPACKED plugged in both usb's to front port on Compaq Presario with computer off booted retried while unit running; double checked all connections. No power light drive appears DOA My Computer will not recognize it. Ready to return it to store as saw many and varied problems with portable hard drives on this site.

I had this same problem with my Western Digital 500gb hard drive...and actually with my Simpletech 160gb as well. It's usually caused by loss of power to the computer or not disconnecting using the safely disconnect...which for some reason i always do knowing it will cause this problem...anyways try restarting your computer with the Drive plugged in or shutdown the computer with it plugged in...then remove it...turn on the computer then replace it. This is essentially the Hard drive version of taking the game out and blowing on the's magic. If that doesn't work, then you have some other problem. Works like a champ for me everytime.

The SimpleTech 160GB ext. drive has a usb 2.0 cable with a y plug. I can only plug in one but I use the additional power supply. I get a message at times telling me to use the usb 2.0 port for faster...

You are using the correct connection, the external power supply is powering the drive, so the USB cable is just handling data. I believe the message may be telling you that you will get faster performance using a USB 2.0 connection, it is probably sensing that your computer's USB port is USB 1.1.

I just recently bout a 250gb simple tech external drive. I came home installed but it wont show in my computer

You might try a different cable or use a USB "Y" cable to supply enough powere for the drive to work, as some computers have difficulty providing enough power from a single port. I plug my Simpletech Signature Mini hard drive in but than I don't know what to do from there.

When you plug the drive in, Windows should recognize it and make it immediately available for your use.

To confirm this, click Start then Computer and it should show up as a device with removable storage. If you click on the Signature drive, you will see the contents of the drive and you can use it just as ou would your "C:" drive.

External HD not recognizing USB ports as being Hi-speed ports

I have the same issue. I have 4 Simpletech Signature 250GB drives. They all worked fine at first. After about six months two of them started connecting at USB 1 speeds. It occurs on 4 different computers!!! The post about it being the computer assumes is wrong. How can it work fine for six months and then suddenly change. Also it occurs on different computers. I have submitted a tech support request with simpletech and will post the results.

Can't install SimpleTech 160 gigabytes

The usb port in your compute dosent support usb 2 please change the port if your system is latest dont connect both the usb cables of the hdd cauz the latest system is with usb 2 and dosent need power if old system please connect the power usb first and then the data usb cable it should work
please also try to connect to another port of your pc if available
