Depending on the speakers--if battery powered or powerpack--they need a driver to work--
you can do a hardware check to see if the speakers are found.
The speakers are NOT plugged into the hard drive..the are plugged into a LPT port that is plugged into the motherboard. The hard drive is the main unit that stores all the windows operational system functions, and software you install on it. This can not happen IF there is no motherboard that has the critical information to tell the hard drive to accept the information and where to send that information through the CPU (central prosessing unit). The drivers are the programs that make your speakers, printers, and any other hardware you add work. Now before the speakers can work the motherboard need a sound card and the driver to make that operational. So the sound card needs to be checked too. go to the dell web site for the drivers for the sound card if needed. www.dell.com

you also have a setting comtrol for your volume too. make sure the volume is turned on.

Old Altec Lansing (no model number on them but they're at least 10 years old) speakers won't work on new Dell Optiplex desktop. They still work on the old Dell Dimension they were on and work on a Del

I have a similar set of Boston Acoustics speakers, which work fine for my tower.
I find it hard to believe that they would just fail outright, and also that (unless you bought an upgraded sound system) you would have digital-only for your audio.
I would recommend to check the basics first.
  1. Check the speakers on another device. Mp3 player will work fine.
  2. check the sound card on your computer (use a set of headphones or another speaker set).
  3. If you find they weren't plugged in, powered on, etc. resolve that. Usually the power plugs are black, and only fit in one spot. The audio cable to plug into the computer is similar to a headphones jack (3.5mm). On most computers the audio output (speakers) port is colored green.
  4. If none of these get you fixed, go into the control panel and click the sounds icon. From there you can view your volume levels (is the sound muted?), view your playback device (it might have a hardware problem, or be disabled), and test the settings.
  5. If you are still stuck after this please also post your version of windows, and the make/model of your computer. If you know it, the type of audio device you are using would also be helpful. (if it's a Dell standard device or perhaps an upgraded Creative or other brand device + model #)
Thanks for asking, and Good Luck!

Computer has no sound. Took hard drive to Best Buy. Geek said according to the computer, the sound card is ok, don"t know why there is no sound, oh and by the way you have a high fidelity sound card, and...

Yes you should be able to fix this. First do you have external speakers for this computer or is it internal? Next has this worked before and stopped working?

That is the setup guide for the speakers.

The two wires plug into a cable that then that single cable plugs into the computer, this way you have sound coming out of the left and right hand speakers.

I need to hook speakers up to my Dell B110 computer.

2 things are needed to get sound from your speakers:

1-wiring connecting your speakers to a socket to the back of the computer. (The spot they need to plug in to ON YOUR COMPUTER is a small light green circular socket. The other end of the plug you plug in here should run to one of your speakers *usually the right side speaker-the right speaker should then have separate wiring to connect the left speaker.)

2- A source of power.
Some speakers use their own power source and plug in to a power outlet - your wall. Other types have a USB type plug and plug into a USB port in your computer and that is how THOSE get their power.

Those are the basics of sound setup. Some computers are equipped with more complicated setups such as surround sound, subwoofers, digital and more. Reply if you need more help, I will try to assist you further.

Hope this helps.

My dell dimension 8400 has no volume I tried new speakers and the volume is not muted how do i get it to work

Click on the speaker icon in the lower right side of the screen, and set the volume control to high. If no help, do you have amplified speakers? Line or headphone outputs are too low to drive speakers directly.

Primary hard drive not found

Hi,
since you already tried removing and reseating the hdds . The problem could be the motherbaord slot. To troubleshoot the same
1. First Disconnect all hardrives and optical drives from the system
2. Go to the system setup or BIOS
  1. Turn on (or restart) your computer.

  2. When the blue DELL™ logo appears, press <F2> immediately.

If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft® Windows® desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again.

3. Hold down the ALT key and press "F"
4. Hit ESC , save changes and exit .
5. SHutdown the system
6. Reconnect the HDD IDE cable to the optical drive connector on the motherboard.
You can refer to the following motherboard diagram
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4550/techov.htm#1101668

7. Check if the hdd , is getting detected in the system setup
You can refer to the following link on how to read system setup screen

to localised your problem, try to plug your speakers to other sound source like mp3 player ,stereo system. if still no sound coming from it,your problem is within the speaker system. perhaps the audio power amplifier ic inside, need to be replaced.

Installing a new hard drive

XP SP 2 supposedly has no limitations on hard drive size so if you selected it to use the maximum available space during setup it "should" have picked up the entire drive. The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you are running the latest BIOS on your system, so you may want to check into that if you haven't already. I hate to say this but you may have to rerun the XP setup from your CD and make absolutely sure that the maximum partition size is selected and that it matches the size you expect it should.

Good luck and let me know how it goes. I'll continue to research and will let you know if I find anything of any help.
