I received the vivitar dvr 850hd with the 2.4" screen. i can't get the flash or strobe light to work to take pictures or movies when it is dark. is there something special that i need to do to get it...

When in the 'Camera' setting, push the left arrow on the camera to 'Auto' or 'On'. the flash should flash if it is dark enough. also, I don't think you can use the flash when making movies.

Hello
When you look at your pictures are they dark, murky and hard to see? If you took pictures at a wedding, dance recital, theater performance or any indoor event and they came out dark, read on to learn why your pictures are dark, and how to fix this common camera problem.

Many people take pictures of indoor events, only to be unsatisfied with the final outcome of their photos. Although you may have bought the top of the line film or digital camera, there are a few limitations that you need to know about.
To correctly expose your pictures, you camera needs a lot of light. The compact point and shoot varieties adjust for this when you're outside during the daytime, and usually your pictures turn out fine, right? Well, then how come when you take indoor pictures, they sometimes come out too dark? There are two culprits; your zoom function and your flash.
Most compact cameras today offer a zoom function. When I used to work in retail photography sales, the first feature that consumers would ask for is zoom. People love to get close-up pictures without using their feet. Although zoom does bring your subject matter in closer, it also decreases the amount of light that can get into your camera. Essentially, the more you zoom, the less light your camera can receive, and your pictures will be darker.
So, if your taking pictures indoors, in a dark church, gym or other window-less room it is very difficult for your camera to get enough light to properly expose your pictures.
This is when most photographers decide to turn on their flash. The flash on your camera is a great tool to illuminate dark situations that are in close proximity to the camera. Most built-in flash units are designed to allow the light to travel 8-10 feet away in poor quality light and up to 15-20 feet in brighter situations.
What most camera users fail to realize is that although your zoom function is visually bringing you closer to the action, you flash cannot reach that far to illuminate the subject, and your pictures will be dark.
Hope it helps, if so do rate the solution

I have sd850 is digital camera , why when i take a picture at night even i use flash the picture comes out to dark . do i need to use the flash or not. i always put in automatic . if i don't want to use...

Go to your ISO settings and set it higher. take several pictures till you seee wnat works. the flash is only good for about 10 fet if it's truly dark. Turn it up all the way and if it's too bright turn it back till you find what you want. the lower the better untill it's too dark. Try pushing the pictures with your computer and as long as your not a witness for court cases pushing the pichures with your computer can give you some great pictures as long as the cameria got the picture OK to beginwith as the lower ISO settings will give you more to work with as the ISO goes up the quality goes down and as you push with the computer the quality goes down but if the orginanal has enogh ( Juice ) in it and you computer prgram is a good one then you can make good Processed pictures and you may be pushing the limits of the camera. Maybe next time shell out for a better camera that has more than 10 Megapixals and you'll start seeing into the dark, 20 megapixals really do well but how deep are your pockets? Pup a big flood light on the job and use the flash with the best batteries that you can find and maybe you can get what your looking for. I'm a pro but some low light pictures using a tripod and a remote shutter( to remove all shake) sometimes can get the camera to step up and get the best picture it can take. Take lots of pictures and use brade name chips as some of the noname chips can do a low light picture bad I've thrown away all the cheapie chips I had and I only use the Hi dollar ones, and I'm good to go.

Flash

checking on the first 2 comments, if there is flash and the pictures are dark - please check the lighting conditions
is it a dark place, fairly lighted or fully lighted

the flash also has a certain range, the subject may be far that the flash cannot reach it

if there is really no flash - it may be a hardware problem, pls contact kodak to arrange repairs
try going to PASM> fill flash too, if still not working - repairs =)

Flash makes my pictures too bright/too dark

u might want to try and put a coffee filter over your flash when you take pictures to make the flash less bright. it sounds really silly but it actually works.
