Question about Philips Magnavox MWR10D6 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

Philips DPTV335 I'm trying to troubleshoot a Philips DPTV335 I just picked up on craigslist.  It has audio but no video.  The original owner stated that the screen looked bowed a few days before it shutdown completely.   He said a repair tech looked at it and told him the blue tube was bad.  My questions is if one tube goes out does it cause the entire set to shutdown or will the other two tubes - red - green - continue to light up.   Right now all three tubes are not on - or are not bright enough to light up the screen.  Thanks in Advance for the advice.  Ed

Thanks Bill for the quick response. I will give the above suggestions a shot.

FYI - I took a better look at the CRT tubes and noticed the following...

All three light up and glow orange....but its very dim...I suspect this is the heater element? Is this powered

Also, the blue tube seems to arc/spark inside the neck of the tube a few times.

    Hey Bill,

Looks like I may have shot myself in the foot.

I tried swapping the blue CRT from one set to another to see if it would work or not.

I have a Philips PTV835 in the garage that has been working fine.  I took out the blue tube from this set and set it aside. I then took the faulty CRT from the DPTV335 and put it into the PTV835.

I powered it up - and got nothing - none of the cans lit up.

I then reveresd the change and put the original blue CRT back into the PTV835.

I powered it up - expecting it to work as before - but its now dead also.   I killed my second set.

My guess is that the faulty CRT somehow damaged something in my good set when I swapped it out. Not sure what?

Do you know what the typical components are that get damaged when a CRT shorts out?

That chassis has a couple of problems I'd check first before writting it off as a bad crt... The vertical Ic can cause the problems you're experiencing. In that unit it's a TDA8177 (vertical Ic) and if it fails you'll find no 10v supply to the HV generator - thus no HV to light the cans. Could also be the HV generator module itself, but more likely vertical Ic before suspecting the HV module. If you hav a dmm you could measure the voltage on pins 7 & 8 or pins 1 & 2 on the HV plug. If you have nothing there it's the generator - if not highly suspect the vertical.
To answer your question - if the blue can were bad red & green would still light depending on the internal short. If all three are out I'd suspect a loss of HV (high voltage) or B+ as it's referenced.
Good Luck!

Blue could very well have a short then - time to drag out the crt tester and check for a filiment short. But a light glow just means that it has low voltage present, probably still no high voltage. Tech probably noticed the arcing also and if he was any good slapped the BK on it and found the short was not fixable. (That's a guess).. So even if you restore B+ you may still have a crappy picture and not worth trying to replace the can, too expensive..

Try this out:

Go to the display settings in the settings menu. Pick HDMI for your video output and follow the steps to set your screen resolution. When I accepted the video settings I was taken automatically to the audio settings options. If you’re not given this option just go to the set audio output settings and enter this screen. Pick the optical connection and follow the screens choosing the audio options that match your receiver. DD and DTS.
At this point you should have video to your TV through HDMI and audio to your receiver through the optical cable.

I have a Phillips DPTV335 with red ghost, I was giving 2 stk 392-110 to replace the original stk 392-120 well this work or do I have to change resistor values? Thanks for your help!

the 110 may work but you should always go back with the STK392-120 and also there are 12 6>8 ohm resistors that will need to be possibly replaced at least two will blow anytime an IC fails in that chassis so replacing the two ICs alone will most likely not fix the issue without the resistors being checked and replaced if any of the 12 are blown

I just bought the 55 inch philips dptv335 tonight. it was used and did not come with an owners manual. it refuses to turn on although there is a sound like the audio is turning on and a click like the...

This is a very common problem. Your Flyback/HVG has gone out. The most commion symptom is that you have audio but no video. We see this all the time on the DPTV3XX models. The bad news is that its nearly impossible to find one.

TV has picture Philips DPTV335 was working fine and suddenly picture went out. Still has sound but nothing on screen (volume bars, picture)

This is a projection TV. No picture can have a whole host of causes.
When the TV turns on, you can see background dimly but no picture.
Caused by the picture being muted. Perhaps the video signal is too fast - 1080i on a TV that does not support it might cause this.
Menu works but no image.
Definite picture muting. A bad video cable, no video from the device providing the picture. From the tuner, the signal circuit board needs repair.
No background, no image, no menu
This is a loss of high voltage to the picture tubes. If the picture cannot draw up and down or side to side, this will happen. Definite time for a repairman. Can be pricey if certain parts have blown out.
Most likely is a loss of vertical drive. (up and down drawing of the picture)

Ed did you change the yokes when you put the DPTV series CRT into the PTV chassis? If not its most likely the vertical output or the Horizontal output that got destroyed. If you changed the yoke its most likely the HV generator.
On the DPTV chassis that should shutdown the vertical deflection which would leave audio working worse case scenario would also be the HV generator and Horizontal output.
