Question about DVD & Blu-Ray Players

Firmware upgrade failure

I followed the instructions to upgrade the firmware on my DVR recorder. At the end of the upgrade process both the on screen instructions and the paper instructions told me to hold down the power button until the unit went off. The paper instructions said then the unit would display "wait" until it was done updating, then the disc tray would close. Neither the "wait" instruction ever appeared, nor did the tray close. The unit is now inoperative, any ideas on how I might be able to make it operative again?

I have unplugged it and it does not restart. The unit I have is a Toshiba RD-KX50SU, DVR with a hard drive disk.

  • dcalhoon Oct 12, 2008

Tried disconnecting the hard drive, and nothing has changed. I do not think I included the fact that the power light comes on, but it will not go any further than that. I cannot get it to access the DVD/recorder or the hard drive, or any screen menus, nothing works except the clock and the power on/off light at the power switch.

  • dcalhoon Oct 12, 2008

How do I get the upgrade restarted since the tray is closed, and it would not close to restart the upgrade process. I also do not understand how the upgrade was interrupted since I followed the on screen directions as well as the printed directions

  • dcalhoon Oct 13, 2008

I talked with someone at Toshiba today, who told me the firmware is on the hard drive of the unit. What I was thinking of doing was reformatting the drive with a computer and trying to install the firmware again through the computer. Does anyone have experience with doing this? Will it work? Any ideas are cheaper than the "official" service center's $140 charge to make this work again

  • dcalhoon Oct 13, 2008

These solutions all seem to require the machine to be operational. This machine will only power up and the clock works. Need a fix that does not require an operating machine

  • dcalhoon Oct 13, 2008

The issue does not have anything to do with the mechanical opening of the tray, the firmware update caused the malfunction.

  • dcalhoon Oct 14, 2008

I cannot install the firmware to the machine since it doesn't operate. I removed the hard drive and put it on my computer, the computer recognized the drive, but windows did not recognize the drive to assign it a drive letter. Since windows did not recognize it I could not format it in windows. Should I maybe download a Seagate tool to reformat it, and will that make the machine work?

  • dcalhoon Oct 14, 2008

These two sites do not have any kind of firmware update for my machine. Seagate support does not know anything to tell me.

  • dcalhoon Oct 14, 2008

The qualified technician is not close to me, must send it to Massachusetts. They also want $140 to get it to work, not spending that on a firmware update that they caused.

  • dcalhoon Oct 14, 2008

Which is the processor board? Is it the one with the main power and fuse in it? More information appreciated

I had the same problem with my RD-XS52. Toshiba refused to fix the problem at no cost, referring me to Tops Electronics for a $143 repair fee. But I am at an FPO AP address overseas and freight both ways to MA will cost me $50-100!!! Can you tell me how you resolved this issue? My unit is still broken: locks up randomly, loses audio, although it does turn on, but it was working flawlessly for 3-4 years until I did the firmware upgrade. I am really upset about this and about how Toshiba refuses to accept responsibility. Really terrible customer service!

Hi,

If I may add...

As the Toshiba support explained, the Operating System is stored in the hard drive (or part of it). To my knowledge, once the unit is powered ON, then said OS is transferred to the random access memory which the built-in processor uses. Treat it like a computer, In a computer this would call for a clean/fresh install. Unfortunately, it does not use DOS or Windows based partition and format since it is a "non standard" drive formats. From this, very limited options:

  • send the unit back for re-programming/loading of the OS to Toshiba, Call 1-800-631-3811 or 1-800-319-6684;
  • reference this site. try procedures for the KX50SU which includes the Seagate utilities;
  • borrow an existing/operational unit and clone the HD though there are some challenges. Pls reference this thread. It is for another model with similar features.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

If you no longer have function to the menu , the door will not open or close , hard drive power not comming on , video output missing to the tv , then power is missing to those boards and a fuse or pr has burnt out or the power transformer is not supplying power out of those wire windings for that part of the system.
if the software did not stall properly , the process board will lock up and cause problems. there may be a set of reset pins on the processing board , if not then unplugging the data and power lines will reset the board ( capacitors still holding energy ) .
but if there is a power problem to those boards then the power circut will need testing or even replacement of the processing board!
do not try to use the computer to re format this kind of a hard drive!!!

looking from the front of the device the main processing board is in the middle area and has alot of on board chips plus one lager chip ( the main processor )

the transformer board converts and purifys the ac power to dc power

  • jason Oct 14, 2008

also if you see a little battery on the board then that will have to be unsoldered to reset the board

  • jason Oct 14, 2008

    can you upload a pic?

the main power board with the fuse converts the ac power into dc power then it purifys and divides power to the different boards.

the main processor board will be hooked up to the dvd drive and the hard drive and the video ouput board plus the display panel in front

  • jason Oct 14, 2008

the power plugs on the hard drive , dvd drive are set up like this:

    black = ground

    red = 5v dc

    yellow = 12v dc

    for testing power output

Holding down the button ON/Standby for a 10 seconds force to DVR to turn off the power. This action could cause several damage to your disks or data. However the unit must be re-starting normally after that with no problems (not in your case) or the unit in another cases after that action re-inicialize your HDD.

In your case the update obviusly was not completed (causing some internal conflict in your unit) or you could be skiping some steps during the updating process. At this point the unit must be reseted. Unplug the unit during at least 3 hours and try again. If still doesn't work need to be serviced.

If firmware upgrading has finished (ensure it) , try unplugging power cord and connecting it back. See if it restarts.

That is because the upgrade procedure was interrupted.

You need to restart the unit with an upgrade disk inside, the problem is that image disk are only provided to Toshiba authorized repairer.

The unit is at this point faulty, you will have to decide if calling the number listed on the owner manual, and get details about repair service, guaranty, and ask information on eventual extended guaranty if provided.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Oct 14, 2008

There is no processor board, that is called the main PCB.

The problem is that the software/firmware on your unit is corrupted. Call back toshiba and ask them a bootable disk to reinstall the software image onto your unit, that is all.

AREN'T THESE GUYS GREAT. LAME.

It pays to read the directions, completely.

DO NOT UNPLUG, TURN OFF, OR USE ANY OTHER FEATURE OF YOUR PLAYER DURING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS. Doing so will cause the writing of the firmware update to the player to be halted and the player may no longer operate properly. If the player stops working, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-319-6684 or HD-DVD Concierge at 1-888-MYHDDVD(1-888-694-3383).

First of all, Nick, you have already instructed her t odo the worng thing. I am not going to pick up the pieces of your failed attempts at trying to remedy this by pulling the hard drive, as opposed to the obvious solution, which is to slide the DVR drive slightly out of the chassis as to allow the disk to be put in, once that is completed, the system will actually boot to the Firmware DVR and fix itself, which is how this needs to be fixed. No other way will you get this problem done. Sorry, but it is true. I sent her to Toshiba, because you guys have already caused enough damage and she is frustrated and just wants the unit fixed, not you geussing at her expense. Good Enough.

If your computer recognizes the Seagate drive in the setup menu you can format the drive using DOS.
But, I agree with "Ginko"... ask Toshiba for warranty repair due to "special circumstances". I worked in a Sony Authorized Service Center for many years and in circumstances like yours they readily provided it because they didn't want to lose a single customer. Sony would send a Letter of Authorization to the customer and the person would bring their unit to us for a "one-time" warranty repair. Call Toshiba and threaten to "Never buy another Toshiba product the rest of your life!". That should do it...If not...too bad for Toshiba! I wish you good luck!

If for some reason you would opt for user performed action, then pls try: 1. reset, unplug from the mains for at least 4 - 6 hour and try it again; 2. check if there is a slide switch of some sort at the rear of the unit; 3. check if there may be a pinhole somewhere along the bottom of the loading tray where a blunted point safety pin maybe inserted; 4. Unplug and open the top cover and move the gears manually to open and leave the tray in eject or open position and plug it on,try to see if the tray is closed it back and working. 5. check internally if there is a mechanical problem such as a slipping/cut belt, gears that do not mesh correctly; 6. if the unit has been in use for some time, it may simply need cleaning and re-application of lubricant in the mechanical assembly. The slider mechanism, depending on the age of the unit and , consists of the small chrome rail, a drive motor, a small gear assembly, and (in some units) a small belt that drives the slider unit via the motor. This small belt causes all sorts of problems. If the belt is broken or slipping, it can cause skipping, dropouts, or simply no start up at all. Also, if the belt breaks in the middle of the disc, the drive mechanism gets hair or dirt wrapped up into the gears, or the pick-up assembly doesn?t return to the start position (called home), the unit will (99% of the time) refuse to release the disc, causing it to become stuck inside the unit. There?s a little micro or leaf type switch located at home position that sometimes gets dirty or breaks and, causing this problem also. Hope this may help; Regards, VOTIT

Can i upgrade my firmware

Yes it can be upgraded if new firm ware is out and only at the Vizio product support site, just enter your model number and will see if any new firmware is out for the player, you will then burn that to a disk and then follow installation instruction, the process takes about 30 minutes to complete if new firmware is available..

I have tried downloading from the samsung website lastest firmware update, which is an iso file when extracted it saves it to disc as a xuf file and the blu ray wont read this what am i doing wrong??

Read the Upgrade Guide (PDF) for instructions on how to do this. It says to burn a CD. The ZIP file extracts to ISO type. The guide tells you what format it needs.

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/search/supportSearchModelResult.do?menu=SP00&searchWord=bdp1400&searchInputBox=bd-p1400&find_button=

READ the PDF file under Upgrade Guide. Make sure you designate the proper file type when burning CD. Check your burning software.

How to make a firmware update CD
Please follow the below procedures.
1 Download the new firmware file from www.samsung.com
2 If the firmware file is compressed (*.zip), the file should be uncompressed to CD image file
(*.iso).
3 Please burn the CD image file on a blank CD-R/RW disc
1) Recommended CD Burning Program is Nero Burning ROM.
2) Burning Options (in case of using Nero Burning ROM)
A. ‘Recorder’ menu ?? ‘Burn Image…’ ?? Select an uncompressed image file(*.iso)
B. Please check ‘Finalize CD (No further writhing possible!)’
C. Please refer to your own CD burning Program Manual if you want to use any other
CD burning program for burning ISO image file.
D. Make sure if the downloaded software is eligible for your BD-P1400.
E. The System Upgrade will not be executed if using the update CD made with NOT
following the upper procedures.
Warning
The following events may interrupt the upgrade process and MAY RESULT IN PERMANENT
DAMAGE TO THE UNIT WHILE UPGRADING.
1. Unplugging the power plug
2. Power outage
3. Dirt or scratches on the burned CD-R/RW disc
4. Closing or opening a disc tray during update processing
How to upgrade the BD-P1400
1. Press OPEN/CLOSE button to open the disc tray.
2. Insert the upgrade CD.
3. Press OPEN/CLOSE button to close the disc tray.
4. Please wait about 6 minutes while verifying.
Verifying Firmware Version.
5. When below message box comes up, please check the date of the Firmware version.
Do you want to update Firmware?
>Current Version : 070730.02_XAA
>New Version : 070903.01_XAA
Yes No
6. Press ‘Enter’ button to choose ‘Yes’ for upgrade and please remove the disc on the tray.
If you select ‘No’, BD-P1400 will be automatically powered off.
If you don’t see above message box, try another disc. Generally, this is caused by disc
quality or a disc creation problem.
7. Please wait for about 7 minutes.

DVR-440HX EPG problems

Hi,

You could try looking on Pioneer's web site to see if a firmware download is available. This sort of thing can happen as time and technology moves on, a firmware update can be like giving your machine a bit of an upgrade and often rectifies issues like this. As for channel four and 5 doesn't everybodies EPG behave like that? I think it's to do with bandwidth in the digital signal, quite often you will notice that groups of channels will be affected at the same time these usually share the same area of bandwidth.

Regard, James

Can't record on dvd+rw disc what kind of disc do I need Thank You

There might be a firmware upgrade to allow this I would use DVD-R for full compatibility however DVD+R media from Philips is increasing in compatibility with most NON Philips and Sony players.

My sony dvd recorder rejects all types of dvd's but will play cd's

Hi.

The symptoms are usually telling you that there is a lens problem. In some case a firmware problem can give the same.
If problem is firmware, the manufacturer will be aware, and there will be an update available.

First contact Samsung to check if a firmware upgrade is available, and follow their instructions to load the update.
Your Samsung contact is listed on the manual.

If that does not work, it means that there is a lens problem, in that case refer to the instructions below:

My player does not read disks

Will not initalize any disk.

A firmware upgrade is available here:

http://r00.liteonit.com.tw/DC/english/download/index.asp

You'll need to have a blank CD and a CD/DVD writer in the PC you use to download the file.

Follow the instructions on the website to upgrade your firmware, this should then allow you to write to DVD's once again.

Recording from guide plus

Recording from the guide requires that the unit be off to receive guide info regularly and copy it to the HD. If your reception is poor or your DVD on time is too great, the guide will not have any info, and the recording be nameless, except for channel and time info. You can force the EPG mode by removing the power plug from the back of the unit, but only do this after you have turned the unit off! While copying the guide to the HD, the display shows EPG while th unit is off, and you will hear the HD cycling.

There is firmware available on the web, although it's model-specific.

Most of the problems with this unit are power supply related: under-rated capacitors and lack of heatsinking.  Google the model number, along with the words 'power supply' to get some answers.  Also, the subject is covered elsewhere in this forum.

There's no help from Cyberhome, as they don't exist any more.
