Question about Canon Digital Cameras

1 Answer

Somehow when I put the CF card in, I bent one of the pins all the way down. Not sure if it can be straightened or it might need new set of pins.

Hi

Not sure what model you have, but the answer can change depending on model.

You can definitely try bending the pin back straight by sticking something down there; hopefully it won't snap off and all will be well.

If you need the card reader replaced, some come right off without too much hassle and no soldering... If you have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel for example though, the CF pins are soldered onto the PCB and it must be un-soldered then the new unit soldered back on... not an easy task.

We are an affordable digital camera repair business, if we can help please let us know.

How to fix cf reader pins

If they are only slightly bent you may be able to straighten them with a small flat screwdriver blade. If they are bent all the way down they will have to be replace - not a job for an amateur! If the two center pins are bent over and touching other pins, then there may be circuit damage - they are the power pins and touching other pins that are output pins blows part of the CF control circuit. This would require replacement of the rear circuit board, which requires programming with Canon software (which they do no supply to anyone)

Canon EOS/Rebel XT won't power up

Joe, this happened to me, just tonight... I got a new CF card and stuck it in, turned it on and one CF card flash. Completely dead from there. I found one of the CF card pins bent over, shorted out the socket and blew the mainboard fuse. I took the camera apart, found the fuse (labelled K) about under the set button area) I bridged the fuse with a bit of solder, straightened out the pin in the socket, put it all back together and it's working fine. The fuse is under the right side shield cover, it's labelled with a letter K. There is another fuse on the power inlet board (below the shutter button) and it's labelled 'P'...

CANON REBEL XT -CF card error

Take a look inside your camera's CF card slot. I suspect that you may have a bent pin in there. If so, you may elect professional repair (likely more than you'd be willing to pay), or you might want to try the following.

Remove batteries and card. Use a small/skinny jeweler's flat screwdriver to bend the pin back as close as possible. The jeweler's screwdrivers that you see at the dollar store will work fine. Another tool that I sometimes use is a stiff wire with a bent hook on the end to get very flattened pins started. Take your time and use as much patience as you can muster (take a breather in between if needed). Just keep nudging it upward/straighter a "tiny bit at a time". Whatever you do, don't try to unbend it with one push/nudge, you won't be able to do it.

It doesn't have to be perfect, just as close as you can get it. When it's the best that you can get it, take your flash card and "SLOWLY" insert it. The card itself should fine-align the pin. Remove the card, and verify that the pin is still straightened. If so, reinsert the card and try it out.

CF Card Err

Sounds like you have bent pins on your CF reader. Open the door, take out the card and look inside. Is there damage to the pins?

You maybe able to fix it with pincers and a needle just align the pin or pins that are out of place, i did this and it worked for me and now my camera is working fine. and for free.

Good luck

Memory card error

Hi, I kept getting a "memory card error" on my Canon PowerShot S500 as well. It turns out that one of the pins in the CF memory card slot was bent. Maybe I accidentally bent it while changing the memory card one day. Anyway, I had to take apart the whole camera to get in there and straighten out the pin, but when I put it all back together, it works great! No more errors. Take a look with a flashlight and see if one of your pins are bent. And if you decide to take it apart, be very careful about keeping track of where each screw goes... they are tiny and they are different sizes.

Sounds like it might be a bent pin. Remove the CF card and look down inside the card slot for any bent pins. If you discover some, then also remove the camera's batteries. Use a small/skinny jeweler's flat screwdriver to bend the pin back as close as possible. Take your time and use as much patience as you can muster (take a breather in between if needed).

CF Error - Card cannot be used

Your problem sounds as if there's a bent pin in the CF card holder inside the camera. To fix it you will have to be very careful with a long blade fine screwdriver. Remember you'll have to straighten it in one go. If you bend them twice you can bet they'll break. A powerfull light to see the bottom where the pins are is needed too. If you're not willing to do the job yourself there's a guy on Ebay USA who straightens them. BMW
