Question about Computers & Internet

Dell, Windows Vista, CD Drive & Viruses

Hi there I need your help please. My CD drive quit working so i took my computer to the Geek Squad since it is still under manufacturers warranty. they ran a diagnostic on it and found that there were over 438 viruses on it and that was what was causing the cd drive not to work. (they tested the drive outside of windows and said it worked fine) i run Trend micro on my system that Best Buy recommends). since this is a software problem it isn't covered under the warranty and therefore it would be $130 for them to clean up. Their alternative for me was to restore my computer to the out of box state. They forgot, my cd drive doesn't work!! do you have any suggestions? thank you in advance

But they said the cd drive ran fine when tested outside of Windows Vista?? So they won't replace it and even if they did, they said I would have the same problem because of the viruses.

Viruses can cause any kind of problems, even if it is uncommon sure they can make a CD temporarily unoperative on Windows.

If the CD is not working , then probably that was a fault not related with the virus problem.

Call them back , and complain about the hardware fault, that is covered for sure, and it must be repaired under guaranty.

If you are not happy with the current repair service call Dell, you will be given a different service.

Note : regarding the virus, that is true, warranty only covers the system restore to factory service.

If you want to preserve your data and settings, you have to do a backup yourself, or perform a thorough system cleanup using antivirus software and debugging tools.
For this kind of jobs better calling a local technician, rather than having this service done from factory.

The only other option do a backup of all your files and send it back to restore the system, then they will have to replace the DVD if it does not work.

If the problem is software, the only way to fix it is reinstalling windows, this will reset your settings and ou need to backup your files.

You can install a DVD RW and see if it works, or have it installed at a local shop, and see if it works, but better to save your data , bearing the annoiance of the computer back to new, with the advantage that the job will be covered entirely by warranty.

Here is a sample of replacements.

I TOOK MY LAPTOP TO THE GEEK SQAUD.they said i need to order a system restore cd for a dell latitude 620.something about 5 dl that have been deleted or destroyed.can you help me

The dl's they mention are Driver files.

A Driver file is a small piece of software that allows communication between the Operating System, and a device.

Operating System:
Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 are some examples of an O/S.
Operating System

Device:
The hardware components inside the laptop, or outside, that are, or can be connected to the laptop.

Some examples of inside hardware device components;
Harddrive, (Hard Disk),
Optical drive, (CD or DVD drive),
Wireless adapter,
are just a few.

Some examples of outside hardware devices, (Peripheral's)
Printer, scanner, Fax machine, copier, (Or an All-In-One machine),
External harddrive,

The Drivers MUST match YOUR laptop.
Has to be for a Dell Latitude D620.
Also has to be for the Operating System that is installed on your Dell laptop.

You can download the drivers, and install them, IF Dell has what it is needed.
Some of the Drivers are within the Operating System itself.
They will also be matched to THAT particular Dell laptop you have.

The easiest, and best method IMHO, is for you to obtain THE System Restore disk from Dell, for YOUR laptop, and fix your laptop yourself.
(Cheaper too!)

1) Turn the laptop on
2) Insert the System Restore disk in the optical drive tray, close the tray.
3) When asked do a Repair. (Non-Destructive Installation)

After you get the System Restore disk, come back here, and someone will lead you through it, if you have problems.

{I have heard the disk/s are not cheap. Not a 'fanboy' of Geek Squad either)
{OH! Did i say that outloud? lol}

The Geek Squad wants to replace my hard drive and reload Windows because they say it is infected with a virus and my warrenty won't cover that.

You don't have to replace the hard drive if it still works. You can reformat it by doing a clean install of windows. It's relatively easy. Just go to your cmos, tell your computer to boot from cd, put your windows cd in your drive. Boot to the windows install cd and follow the instructions and answer the questions on the screen. Good luck and let me know if you need anything else.

PLEASE, I HAVE A DELL D610 LATITUTUDE LAPTOP AND I WAS WORKING WITH BEFORE A BLUE SCREEN APPEARED WITH SOME ERROR MESSAGE, AND NOW THE HARD DISK IS NO LONGER RECOGNIZING, WHEN IT DOES IT ODSN'T ALLOW ME TO...

Blue screen error may generally appear for three important reasons : 1.If you system is infected with some viruses and your hard drive has bad sectors in it.
2. If your memory card has gone bad or not properly pluged.
3. The OS has gone corupt due to virus attack.....

Resolution: 1. Go ahead and do a complete format on your hard drive and then install the OS, i.e., Win XP.
2.Try replacing your Memory Card in your system.
3. Change your hard drive or conatct Geek Squad @ 1-800-433-5778 for data recovery.

Unable to read data on drive

Hi Franoisebis,

I can help you with that, you will need a data recovery pro to attempt to retrieve your data. Unfortunately Geek Squad really isn't equipped to do that. If you reply with your Country, State and City I will direct you to an appropriate Pro nearest your location.

GEEK SQUAD

I agree. Never ever ever ever ever take your computer to Geek Squad. I don't know how many times I have to go to people's homes and correct something GS did or they tell me they reformatted their drive, losing all their data without telling them first, for something so simple that could have been fixed inside of 15 minutes. And they charge way above industry standard and most of their techs have had no formal training.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as FixYa. Thank you.
