Problem with a dell computer..

Hi there,
i recenetly received a dell computer (dont know model name) and when starting it up, it has 'Keyboard Failure'. It doesn't have an actual slot where i can plug in a keyboard but i used an adapter to change it to USB. I even used a wireless keyboard and mouse from dell themselves plugged it in the USB and still the same 'Keyboard Failure'.

Its a Dell, the serial number is B1GL82J and model number is DC8M.

I have tryed time and time again in different USB slots and still it doesn't work. I belive its something internally now.

Any wisdom with the problem.

Many thanks.

My sister called with the same problem so i rushed in with a PS2 keyboard only to find there is no PS2 port.  so i thought the USB ports may be failing and being the brainiac that i am, i thought it has a PCI slot i can buy a USB card and presto.  Problem is it isn't recognized by the box and i cant get into the BIOS to troubleshoot.  WTF was Dell thinking when they designed this box?  Resetting teh CMOS didn't help either.  Sigh...

Hi,

You may try connecting a different usb keyboard to your system. Mostly, some keyboard converted from serial connection to a usb could cause this kind of problem. In some cases also, wireless keyboard and mouse won't work when u turned on your system if the driver is not properly install.

You may also try disconnecting any other usb devices from your computer. Disconnect also your power supply then push and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Plug back in the power cord then connect your keyboard. Turn on your computer. if it doesn't work, i suggest to call your computer manufacturer and check your warranty. This could be an issue with the motherboard of your computer.

Keep me posted.

Thanks.

Jeff

I believe your problem lies with the Keyboard Chip on the Motherboard, possibly needs replacing or re-soldering. A PC repair facility should be able to check this out.

I tired a known working KB and also removed all USB devices and retried. I also tried a new power supply as it was suggested on other forums that it could potentially be an under performing PS. I disconnected all devices from the PS ie, HDD and Optical drives. i think it is the Motherboard at this point. Dell will not help as it is out of warranty.

Thanks for your consideration of my issue. i appreciate the effort.

Disable inspiron 1525 keyboard

Step 1:
Dell sells technology such as computers, computer peripherals and consumer electronics to both consumers and businesses. Dell sells both wired and wireless keyboards and mice that are compatible with Dell and other computer systems. Dell wireless keyboards may encounter hardware, software or other problems under certain conditions.

Power Dell wireless keyboards transmit data to the Dell USB receiver, which in turn passes the data to the computer's operating system. The keyboard gets power from two AA batteries. As the batteries lose charge, the keyboard's transmissions can become intermittent. Replacing the old batteries with fresh ones will ensure consistent communication and resolve the power issue. b> Interference Dell wireless keyboards operate best and are least susceptible to interference when the user places them at the recommended distance from the USB receiver. The distance, specified in the keyboard's accompanying software or installation guide, varies by keyboard. Even if the user places the keyboard at the proper distance from the USB hub, metal objects between the keyboard and hub can create interference; moving objects that create the interference resolves the issue. b> Connection The Dell USB receiver that passes data from the keyboard to the computer requires proper and secure installation in a working USB port. If the receiver connects to the USB port improperly, or if the USB port to which the receiver is connected is faulty, the keyboard will not operate as expected. The user can reseat the receiver in the USB port, or connect to the receiver to a different, functioning USB port to resolve connection problems. b> Synchronization Dell wireless keyboards can broadcast at more than one frequency, just as their associated USB receivers do. If the two devices broadcast at different frequencies, they will not pass information to each other. The user can resolve this situation using the buttons labeled "Connect" on the top of the receiver and the bottom of the mouse. Pressing the buttons simultaneously triggers the synchronization process. b> System Dell wireless keyboards are compatible with most Dell systems. However, a keyboard may be incompatible with a given computer for reasons related to the computer rather than to the keyboard. To determine if this is the case, a user can connect the keyboard to a different computer. If the keyboard functions as expected with the second computer, the problem may reside in the first computer rather than in the keyboard.

Hi there. i have a dell pc but the hot keys for battery metre and caps lock dont show on screen when hit. please assist

Go into the manufacturer's website and download the driver again.

Get onlineand got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "DellSupport" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support). Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operatingsystem when requested. Download and install the Keyboard drivers.
The drivers for hotkeys might be under Input, Keyboard, etc. You can also check to see if there is software on the driver site for hotkeys.

Hi ktaydus.

Welcome to FixYa! How are you doing?

You did not specify the model of your dell computer.

You can check the manual online so that you know the step by step instruction on how to replace the keyboard of your dell computer.

You can go to this link: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/manuals?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anavml

Just select the model of your dell computer or enter the service tag which you can find on the bottom of your laptop.

Hope that helps. Thank you for using FixYa.

Turn off the computer then open the computer case. Remove the modem look on the chip side, it will have the name of the manufacturer on the largest chip. You can also copy the fcc number and search google for it.

My keyboard is lock i dont have ide how to unlocked??

Hi there,
If your keyboard has stopped working, try this. Goto the Device Manager in the Control Panel and uninstall the keyboard for your Laptop. Restart your computer and cross your fingers. If that doesn't work, then you need to visit the Dell website to download the latest drivers for your Notebook. You can do this by using a USB keyboard or the On-Screen Keyboard in the Start > Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access Center.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LITTLE GREEN BUTTON ON THE BACK OF THE KEYBOARD? MODEL CEO560

Hi, the green button on the back is a hard reset button, you usually have to press this if the battery's have been replaced or if the keyboard starts playing up such as keys not working when pressed, its just a master reset button to restore the keyboard to new, so its nothing major its just a safety feature in case your keyboard stops responding it just resets the communication between the keyboard and the receiver on the computer.

Dont know how to install my dellkeyboard

Hi, these instructions will help you, and "everything that you do for the Keyboard; apply the same instruction to the Mouse." First, click on the "Start" button, in the "Start Search Window, Type: keyboard; the "Keyboard's" Properties window will open. You can (Test) to see exactly how your keyboard is responding. If you are still having the same problem, (check the Keyboard Status), try "Updating the Drivers," by clicking on the "Properties" button. Now in the event that neither of these solutions solve the problem, which I hope you shouldn't have to do anymore; try "Uninstalling the Keyboard. To "Uninstall the "keyboard," do the following. Shut-down (turn- off completely), disconnect all the Keyboard Devices that are attached to the Computer. Next, turn-on the computer, and go back to the "Keyboard Properties," this time click on the "Change Settings" button, next click on the "Driver" button, and select the "Uninstall" button. Once that is finished, shut-down the computer again. Now you want to "Reconnect" all the devices that were connected before, and "Turn-on" the computer. You will repeat exactly what you did from the start, this will "Reinstall the Keyboard. Restart the computer again after all changes have been made; this will ensure the changes take place properly. "Rating the solution will let me know if it worked, or you may need further assistance, thanks."
