The speedlight 200E is not E-TTL compatable. Which means you have to shoot with the flash in manual. My 400EZ doesn't work on XTi either. It really needs an EX flash to properly work with the digital EOS bodies.

The only way to solve the problem I see is to turn the flash into non-TTL one. It can be easy done by opening four screws at the connector side of the flash, unsoldering or cutting the BROWN line and closing the connector back. The AF assist led will work.

That I did on my 200E with Canon 400D camera and all works file.
Enjoy!

In auto mode, the flash works only if it is necessary. You are saying that the flsah doesn't work in auto mode, and I assume that in other modes it's working properly. That means there is nothing wrong with the flash. So don't worry about the flash, it will fire in necessary, in full auto mode.

Canon eos 1000d flash not working

To the left and the right of the hot shoe (where your speed light slides) are two rails. On the end are two springs. `one is connected to a switch indicating there is an external speed light connected.
If on is kept in place the spring will keep telling I have an external speed light. Check what spring is not back in the correct position.
Look from the backside to the front.

I actually managed to resolve the issue.

As I am a naive first time user, I never sync'ed the Speedlite to ETTL.

Stupid error but now have resolved, thank you.

Remote Firing of Flash Units

The EOS 40D does not have a transmitter built in. The remote flash units must be set to "Slave" and the on-camera external flash unit (eg Speedlite 580EX) or transmitter (ST-E2) set to "Master". Note that the Speedlite 430EX doesn't have the function to act as Master and you need a minimum or the 580EX or a ST-E2 speedlite transmitter (or similar) as Master/s.
