Chainsaw won't keep running except on full throttle?

I have a craftsman chainsaw that will start but only keeps running on full throttle. What would cause this?

Running at full throttle but not at idle would probably be caused by not enough air getting through to the cylinder with the fuel. This could be caused by blocked/dirty air filter, air leak or worn/damaged piston or cylinder. The higher the revs are the less air to fuel ratio is needed so it will run at these speeds. First check your air filter, if that is fine take the spark plug out and examine the inside of the cylinder. You will need to check here with the piston down. If you want to be a bit more thorough you can remove the exhaust and check the piston face and inside the cylinder from here aswell. You don't want to see any scoring or solid lumps of anything in here. While you have the exhaust off give it a few firm taps to make sure there is no major carbon build up and clean the spark arrestor if it has one. The arrestor is normally a small gause found on or near the exaust outlet pipe. If that all seems fine then get some soapy water and squirt it around the carb gaskets and pipe that runs from the carb to the cylinder. If you see bubbles appearing here when the machine is running then you have air escaping and it will need investigating. Failing this you could have worn piston rings or crank seals. Ideally to test this area you need proper pressure testing equipment.

Lacks power after 1/2 throttle also knock on motor after 1/2 throttle

it may all be in the carby settings
if you do not have it adjusted correctly then it may be running too lean at full throttle and that is causing a problem such as detonation causing the knock
start it and slowly adjust the settings as you increase the throttle settings

take it in to a service center for a proper diagnosis and quote

Craftsman 18" chain saw 42cc. Starts and runs fine. Will not idle after running for a while. Will not restart when hot. Will start after the saw cools down.

I had a 2 cycle snow thrower that acted similarly. It needed a new diaphragm. When they get old they act up. I could never see a physical difference between the good and bad one but the new one fixed it. It's a flat rubber part that is in the carburetor. Call Sears parts or visit them on-line to get a parts breakdown of the carb.

Chainsaw runs fine than goes full throttle all by its self and cannot shut it off with switch.

Kill switch is broken or disconnected. Throttle linkage is broken or disconnected or idle is set way too high.

Saw will lnot start----needs gas intake adjustment

Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then back out each CCW 1-1/2 turns. This is a basic setting that will allow the engine to start and run. Let the engine warm up, then pull the throttle full on--turn H screw CW until the engine speeds up somewhat. Proper adjustment is when the engine is 4-stroking unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L CW until the engine idles fairly well, but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Need carberator settings for a sears craftsman chainsaw model#358.354831

You don't want to tighten them down just turn them in until the are just snug and then turn them out.
Start with the low at 2 full turns out and the high at about 1 full turn out. Start the saw and let it idle adjust the low idle to where it runs smooth. Adjust the high until the saw runs as much rpm as you can get at w.o.t. (Wide Open Throttle).
